There is no doubt that COVID-19 has many people panicking.

Regardless of age, nationality, and social status – each person has to make certain lifestyle and economic adjustments to cope with the global pandemic.

Tourist destinations that used to be inundated by the crowd have turned into ghost towns. Schools were shut. People have lost their jobs within a blink of the eye. Others are forced to stay at home to protect themselves and others from the infection. There has been a number of travel restrictions here and there. Needless to say, life has suddenly turned upside down.

Coping is never easy – especially for those who have scarce resources

For people like Jen Mullins, a pregnant mom who lives paycheck to paycheck, to stock up on food is not easy. Painful as it may sound, she is among the millions who now must live with uncertainty. Recently, she took to Facebook her sentiments as well as to highlight an important encounter that has restored her faith in humanity.

So, how did a grocery trip changed her perspective in life?

On March 17, Mullin’s Facebook posted her story to share positivity amid the COVID-19 crisis. And her story began when she went to Meijer to grab a few essentials. However, with limited money and limited options, she only managed to put just a few items in her cart.

She shared:

“My family and I have to live check by check. So when people are buying in bulk and clearing the shelves it’s harder on us because I can’t afford a lot of what’s left. But I made my way to Meijer (Allen Park, Mi) today and bought this. $37 worth for this… it wasn’t much but it was what I could afford for us to make dinner (with a few drinks in the basket you can’t see).”

While waiting at the check out counter, his 4-year-old was requesting a toy car. Because of their situation, she had to tell him that they could not afford it. While it is not easy to do so, she was left with no choice. For any mom, being unable to grant your child’s simple joy is heartbreaking. More so, if you are already doing your best to provide for them with minimal money on hand.

Then, a little surprise took place.

She continued sharing her story, stating:

“Well after all this I go to pay for our things and the cashier hands me a gift card. She then tells me the lady that was in front of me bought it and wanted me to have it but to make sure she left first. She got me a $50 gift card to help us out. Of course, I’m pregnant and super emotional as it is and I start bawling my eyes out in line at Meijer.”

The worst situation can truly bring the best in people.

In times when everyone is struggling, a little act of kindness goes a long way. Many are still willing to share their blessings despite struggling themselves. This is what humanity is all about. Cliché as it may sound, but real heroes do not wear capes. Instead, they wear the biggest heart.

A story that she will take to heart

As a result, Jen Mullins concluded her story with a little more hope in her heart. She likewise expressed her intention to pay it forward one day.
