Drinking alcohol and coffee moderately may be the key to living longer, study finds

You’ve probably only heard about alcohol and coffee is bad for you, but what if there was a way it could actually prolong your life? Of course, too much of anything is bad for you, so there’s a catch when it comes to alcohol and coffee. This is based on a certain amount of people, therefore is not conclusive on the broader spectrum.

This will make a lot of people happy, just don’t overdo it!

University of California, Irvine, put out a study that might prove alcohol and coffee could help you live longer

The 90+Study is a study that started back in 2003 at UCI, and was conducted on over 1,600 people that are now 90 and over or older-old people. There isn’t much known on how these older-old people make it to such a ripe age in life, the 90+Study is meant to explore the reasons they live so long.

Researchers from the 90+Study also used 14,000 members from The Leisure World Cohort Study, which started in 1981. In the LWCS study, mailed surveys to residents of what was the Orange County, Leisure World Retirement Home.

How the study worked

In the study, participants are visited every 6 months and asked questions about their diets, medications, activities, medical history and many other various factors.

The main focus of the study was to find the link to the recent spike in the longevity of the older-old population. By finding out what type of diets and activities were associated with people living longer, researchers would be able to more accurately say what the causes were.

What the study found

The studies show that people who were able to drink alcohol and coffee moderately, actually live longer than those who completely sustained from the two. The study also showed that people that are over 70 and are overweight lived longer than thinner old people.

The 90+Study also delved into dementia

In the 90+Study, researchers did neurological and neuropsychological tests to determine certain causes for dementia for the older-old communities. It’s hard for doctors and scientists to pinpoint the exact causes, but studies like this help them make strides and better understand Alzheimer’s.

Over 40% of people aged 90 and older suffer from dementia while almost 80% are disabled. For unknown reasons, both are more common in women than men. Approximately half of the people over 90-years-old, with dementia, did not show sufficient neuropathology in their brains to explain the cognitive loss.

Although the studies show alcohol and coffee could help you live longer, the keyword is moderately

Moderately means only to a certain extent, over-drinking or binge drinking will not help you live longer. If you can’t keep your consumption to a moderate level, there will most likely be negative effects on your health from both. This study is not conclusive and is based on only a certain amount of people, it’s no guarantee, as everyone is different.

I know this will make a lot of people feel better about drinking coffee and alcohol, just do so moderately and you might live longer than you would without it. Don’t use this as an excuse to go wild, only you know if you have a problem with anything. While studies like this help better understand the sciences behind diet and consumption, there can always be underlying factors.
