Woman has hilarious sewing mishap while filming DIY face mask video
There is no shortage of humor in the middle of this quarantine. From memes, TikToks, and talk show hosts joking about it from their homes, people are finding ways to keep spirits up and spread smiles.
Joining in on the fun is Kay Pruitt, and she wants to show us how to make our very own DIY face masks!
Right as the video starts, this seems like it’s going to be a typical and mundane DIY video. Although the demeanor that Kay has about her, from her awkward confidence to the look on her face, already says otherwise.
Her almost cheeky Southern accent makes it just a bit funnier too
Perhaps intentionally, she starts off and gives us a run-down of what she’s going to do. She says she’s going to teach us how to make our very own face masks.
She looks like she knows what she’s doing. What could go wrong?
“You do not have to be an expert sewer. I am certainly not. I’ve actually borrowed this stuff from my sister in law. But I promise you, if I can make a face mask, so can you!”
This is probably the part where you went “Oh no”.
But maybe we shouldn’t be too quick to judge her sewing skills. Let’s keep watching. Maybe she’ll surprise us. “Let’s get sewing”, she says before the video plays a transition frame.
The cheeky piano music, and the fact that the transition card is written in comic sans, doesn’t bode well. We don’t know if you’ve been told, but using comic sans is never a good sign.
First, get the dimensions of the fabric right. You’ll want it to be 9 x 6 inches. A handy piece of paper with those dimensions is what she uses as her guide.
Then she brings out the scissors. The really big scissors. We’re getting nervous just looking at the size of them
Along she cuts on the fabric while talking to the viewers. “You just start following around the….OOH“, as she nips her finger.
“That’s what I get for not wanting to wear my glasses on camera!”
If you have anxiety or fear of sharp objects, then we’re really sorry you have to watch this. Also, we think it’s twice now that she’s muttered “Sh*t!” under her breath, but who’s counting, right?
Another transition card plays, shortly before we see her with bandages on her fingers. “I’m gonna use this little tool this time“, she tells us while holding up a small, plastic round-cutter. Think a pizza cutter but for paper and cardboard.
We’re gonna go ahead and say – thank goodness she’s not using the scissors anymore
Now she’s moving on to the straps for the mask. For this, she needs to measure 7 inches to cut from the straps she has.
“I have a handy little ruler right here at the bottom of my mat that I’m gonna use”
Looks like it’s going smoothly until she goes “They make these numbers so small“. Now she brings her head as close as she can to the mat, all but kissing the surface of the table. Or maybe she is kissing the table a bit. It’s hard to tell with her hair in the way.
Now that she’s…ahem…”measured” the elastic strips that she just cut, she proudly holds up the two strips to the camera. “I’ve got my 2 seven inch strips that’ll go around our ears“, which are totally, 100% exactly the same length, what do you mean they’re not even?
“Okay, we have our two squares of fabric facing each other and we’ve laid down our elastic strips up to the corners, sticking out like a piece of bacon in a BLT!”
“And now you’re ready to sew!“, unfortunately, her enthusiasm is short lived as the sound of the sewing machine immediately makes her jump and let out an “ooh!”. In fairness to Kay, it probably made some of you jump too. Though that might have more to do with having to watch her operate the thing.
“Before you get to the end of the seam, you’re gonna want to reach through…” as Kay brings her arm under the sewing machine, out to the other side to hold onto the fabric.
Nothing’s happened yet, but we can hear your hearts beating faster already
Then she continues “And then you’re gonna take your elastic- hoooo!”, as her sleeve is caught under the machine.
“Whoops, I think I just sewed my shirt!”
Nothing to worry about. She can just reach over and turn the machine off, which she prepares to do.
Over her arm goes to reach for the “off” switch, and possibly the most uncomfortable part of the video happens
The machine activates again, with her arm already underneath it from the first mishap, and Kay utters a gasping “aaaAAHH“. She gathers herself together and tells us “I think it got a little skin“, which is the last thing anyone wants to hear.
In an attempt to free herself, she removes her shirt as she hunches over in front of the sewing machine. A young boy walks in right on time to see what she’s gotten herself into. Is this her nephew or her son? We don’t get a chance to find out since he seems to go “nope”, and leaves almost as quickly as he showed up.
We’re met with yet another transition card, and this one just reads “Oops”, which sums up the video really well
She’s finished her mask and left it open right at the top so she can turn it inside out if she needs. It’s time to put the finishing touches, she says. Great! We didn’t think we’d be able to watch any longer and find out how many more accidents she’d have.
Something about her mask looks unusual to her, though. She takes a while looking at it closely before she figures out what it is (here’s a hint: It’s probably the uneven straps).
“Okay, we aren’t going for perfection here. We are going for protection”
Well, she’s not wrong
“These don’t have to be pretty, y’all. They just need to cover your mouth and your nose…”
It’s time to show just that! Kay puts one strap on her right ear and gets ready to do the other one, right before the mask falls flat on her face. Both figuratively and literally.
Poor Kay. She ends the video by just picking up the wine glass and sipping her failure away. You might not have noticed, but the wine showed up right after the mishap with her sleeve. At least she tried!
Some of you who recognize famous faces might have figured out already that Kay is in fact, a character played by American actress Stephnie Weir. She was actually a cast member on the sketch comedy series MadTV from 2000 up until 2006. So you can relax now if the sewing machine accident made you uneasy.
