With many of us facing temporary unemployment and spending the majority of their day stuck inside at home, there’s no better time than no to focus on sprucing up the garden. With a bit of dedication and the right level of care and attention, you can give your garden a new lease of life, just in time for summer.

But before you can get planting and pruning, the more difficult, boring tasks must be taken on first. One of these tasks is getting rid of your garden’s pesky weeds.

Nobody enjoys de-weeding, but we all know how wild and crazy weeds become if we leave them to do their own thing. Luckily enough, there’s a simple way to kill weeds and (hopefully) prevent them from ever growing back. And the best part? It’s completely chemical-free.

All you need is some vinegar, some dish soap and some Epsom salt, and you’re all set!

Ready to get started making your DIY natural weed killer?

Here’s what you need:

  • 1 gallon of vinegar, any kind is fine
  • 1/4 cup of dish soap
  • 2 cups Epsom salt (regular salt is fine if you don’t have Epsom in)
  • A 1-gallon spray bottle or container, cleaned and dry

And that’s it! There’s no need to go out and boy anything too fancy or expensive – these basic ingredients, found in most kitchen cupboards, will more than do the job.

How to make the weed killer

  • Gather your ingredients and carefully pour the right amount of salt into your container.
  • Next, pour in the vinegar.
  • Close the lid of your container and give your mixture a shake.
  • Then leave the solution to sit in the container for an hour to allow the salt to fully dissolve.
  • Next, it’s time to add the dish soap.
  • Shake your container again to combine the ingredients.
  • Pour the contents of the container into a spray bottle.

  • Spray the ingredients directly onto your weeds. It’s best to choose a sunny day to do this, as the sunlight will help to kill off the weeds.
  • Now it’s waiting time! After 24 hours, the weeds in your garden should completely die.

This solution is pretty effective, so make sure you only spray your weeds. If you get it on the plants you actually like in your garden, you will probably end up killing them too, so watch out!

Perhaps the best thing about this all-natural DIY weed killer is that it’s completely safe to spray around children or pets, because there are no harsh chemicals that they could touch or breathe in. It’s entirely non-toxic, yet it still works a treat.

Unlike commercial weed killers, this handy DIY version won’t affect your water supply or kill your plants, either. So not only is it effective and safe, it’s eco-friendly too!

You might assume that you need to use a chemical weed killer if you actually want to see results in the garden, but this is far from the case. While some natural weed-killing methods might not work so week, this homemade weed killer works just as well.

The salt kills the top layer of weeds, while vinegar can get deeper into the roots of the weeds. The dish soap works as a binder and allows the other ingredients to stick to the weeds.

Put the three ingredients together and you’ve got yourself a winner!
