Alzheimer’s patient forgets he’s married, asks his “favorite person” to marry him & she agrees

Peter might be losing parts of himself, but there’s one thing he’d never forget – his love for Lisa.

Lisa Marshall has been caring for her husband Peter since 2018. At the young age of 53, he was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.

The neurological disorder has been straining nearly 6 million people in the United States.

People aged 65 and above are often affected by the disorder, but some can have symptoms even if they’re below 64.

“I didn’t know anything about Alzheimer’s,” Lisa shared with TODAY her experience when she first heard the news. “It was something you get when you’re 80. I was ignorant about it. I didn’t know anything at all. I knew cognitively he was slipping quick, but I was in denial.”

Slowly, their habits began to change. Lisa took up caretaking tasks such as putting up a bulletin board of familiar faces or installing a bidet to assist Peter. During the course of their journey, she thought of documenting their lives and how they’re building a life despite the challenges.

But through all of the pain – physical, mental, and emotional – a ray of sunshine cracks through and affords them moments they’d cherish forever.

When they were watching TV one day, a wedding scene unfolded. Peter, moved by the scene, turned to his wife and asked her if she wanted to marry him.

“I said, ‘Do what?’ And he pointed to the TV, to the scene of this wedding and I said, ‘Do you want to get married?’ He said yes and had this huge grin on his face,” Lisa shared with WNBC. “He doesn’t know that I’m his wife. I’m just his favorite person.”

They’ve been married for 12 years, but Lisa liked the idea.

“I’m the luckiest girl in the world. I get to do it twice,” she said to the news outlet. To make the moment more special, Lisa’s daughter, Sarah Brehant organized the event. She owns a wedding planning business and she knew how important this moment is for her mom and her stepdad.

Their renewal of vows was intimate and the effort and love poured into the event were outstanding.

“It was so perfect. I couldn’t have dreamt for a better day. It was so magical,” Lisa shared with WNBC. “I can’t remember seeing him so happy for so long. He was so happy.”

Through all of the heartbreak, the almost endless stream of challenges, and brief moments of clarity, two people found a way to cherish what they have built and celebrate a love that everyone will remember.

As their minister perfectly framed:

“Today is a wonderful reminder that the things we need most are often not the things we acquire but things we create, nurture, and invest in.”

As Peter’s condition rapidly progressed, Lisa can’t say if he can still remember this event. But for Lisa, this moment will stay with her forever.
