Two brothers play one of the most beautiful renditions of 'Amazing Grace' ever recorded
Amazing Grace is a popular song for church services, weddings, memorial services, and more. The song has touched people around the world. So, it’s not surprising it’s been covered hundreds of times. But now, two brothers are reinventing it in a way that might not have ever been heard before.
Most of us have probably been touched by the song.
But this version might just take your breath away. The cover, performed on pan flute and quenacho by musical group Wuauquikuna, is hauntingly beautiful. Wuauquikuna is a folk music group from Ecuador. The name means “brothers” in the Quechua language, which is perfect because Luis and Fabian are real brothers.
They’ve traveled around the world for 16 years sharing music native to the Americas — both North and South.
“We are representing the prophecies from our elders and it is related to join together two cultures just like the Eagle from the North and the Condor from the South are sharing the same sky,” states their website. “It will be our future when people from all tribes and cultures come together as one.”
The brothers play many instruments used in folk music in North and South America.
The quenacho, used in their cover of Amazing Grace, is a traditional wooden flute from the Andes. They also play instruments like the quena, Chinese flute, toyos, rondador, and zampoñas.
“When I am dancing and playing flute, I feel the spirits of past generations,” said Fabian. “To dance is to feel free. I feel individuality in my style of dance. I give respect to my elders. I bring respect to myself, my family, and all the people. Let our children not forget our past and our roots.”
Their cover of Amazing Grace has been viewed almost 200,000 times by people around the globe.
Although it’s a familiar song for many of us, there’s rarely been a version like this one. As the brothers play their flutes, occasionally adding soft percussion, it’s easy to get lost in the music…feeling like it might go on forever.
“It’s a way of life to sing, dance and drum,” said Luis.
“To the heart beat, the heart beat of the people, the heart beat of mother earth. There is no life without a heart beat, dance for life.” [sic]
The new cover does what the brothers have set out to do — merge the many cultures of the Americas. In this case, they do so by setting a traditional North American song to the instruments of the Andes.
The brothers usually play traditional folk music.
But they also have done covers of songs by Celine Dion, Andrea Bocelli, and Simon and Garfunkel. It’s an opportunity for many people to hear folk music from the brothers’ home for the first time. There’s no doubt their beautiful performances will continue to draw people from all over the world.
