250 Amish men gather to move a barn by hand
Usually, when you have a barn raising, a group of men gathers to build the barn from the frame up. The Amish, though, literally take barn building to a whole other level. Instead of building a new one, they simply pick an already built barn by hand and move it to wherever they need it.
A group of 250 Amish men in Ohio decided to do just that one cold morning, and it was all captured on video.
A society based around the community
The video starts with the arrival of the 250 Amish men as they prepare to move a large barn 150 feet across a farm in Ohio. The catch, the group is going to do it by hand and all in one piece. Home to the highest number of Amish congregations, Ohio has seen an influx of Amish people starting from their settlement in Pennsylvania to the east in the 1800s.
The Amish way of life
On this particular cold March morning in 2019, the men had gathered to move the barn in a sign of cooperation, a major part of the Amish lifestyle. Along with them were the Amish women and children. What was absent was any signs of technology as the Amish do not use any equipment that requires electricity.
This is done to cut themselves off from the outside world, something they see as technology as a negative influence that could destroy their very way of life if allowed to become commonplace. Many Amish communities do use modern electronics, such as batteries, and most Amish communities have a phone relegated to a small shed on the property of the Amish community.
Working together
As the men gather to move the barn, they spread out around all four sides of the structure. With their goal in mind, the men lift the barn, which has already been prepared for transport and slowly move it across the ground. To top it off, the men also turn the barn 90 degrees before setting it down in its new location.
In all, the big move began at 9 a.m., lasting all of two minutes and 40 seconds, with the entire process only taking five minutes total from start to finish. Using just the 500 hands that god had provided them with, the men were able to move the barn in a heroic show of teamwork and community.
An inspiration to all
This feat serves as a great reminder of how we can all achieve great things by simply working together towards a common goal. It is the Amishβsβ non-reliance on modern technology which has knit the Amish communities around the country together that much more.
