Heavenly duet by Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman takes performance to new heights

There aren’t many things that can make us feel the way music can. It’s likely the most universal form of self-expression as well as the most powerful.

Oftentimes, you don’t even need to understand the language in which an artist sings (if there are lyrics) to get a sense of what is being sung. Both the music itself and the tone of the singer is usually enough to gauge what emotions are being conveyed.

Andrea Bocelli is an acclaimed Italian opera singer, songwriter, and producer. Though opera may not be the most popular form of music, it has generated some of the most beautiful songs. It’s delicate and powerful.

Bocelli grew up with many challenges. He was diagnosed with congenital glaucoma at an early age and lost his sight completely at the age of 12 after being struck in the eye during an association football game.

But he showed his love for music early in life. He began playing the piano at 6-years-old and also took up the flute, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, and drums. By the age of 7, he was emulating the voices of some of the world’s greatest singers.

Bocelli is now an inspiration to many. Celine Dion has even said, “If God would have a singing voice, he must sound a lot like Andrea Bocelli.”

If you have heard any of his songs, you would understand his influence. His voice is one of a kind

In 2007, he and English singer, Sarah Brightman, performed Bocelli’s popular song, “Time to Say Goodbye” at Teatro Del Silenzio in Italy.

The original song was titled, “Con te partirĂ²” or “With you I shall leave” and was sung by Bocelli in 1995. The music was written by Francesco Sartori while the lyrics are by Lucio Quarantotto.

Bocelli’s version was already a hit but when he and Brightman paired up for the second version (“Time to Say Goodbye”) in 1996, it was an even greater success.

Their performance generated over 42 million views on YouTube!

It’s easy to see why.

Their voices alone are magnificent but paired together, they’re a match made in music heaven. Their voices balance the other with little effort.

Dressed in white, to match the heavenly vibes, of course, the pair really does look angelic. It’s perfect as their physical appearance matches their calming and gentle voices. As anyone might find it intimidating to sing alongside Bocelli, Brightman makes it look easy.

She herself has had a successful career. She made her debut in musical theater with Cats and went on to star in Phantom of the Opera. Aside from musical theater, she is known as the pioneer of the classical crossover music genre. She has since gone on to have a very successful career as a solo artist.

So singing with Bocelli, no big deal!

During the performance, cameras flash as Brightman sings her verse. The stadium is quiet. Everybody listens to each and every note she sings with control and poise.

The music itself is wonderful. It’s light with a bouncing snare. It feels reminiscent of going on an adventure – though a somber one.

Bocelli’s verse is just as perfect. Though his voice is much deeper than Brightman’s, it isn’t to the point of bravado. It’s still careful – gentle, even.

All in all, these two are the perfect match. Whether you are a fan of opera or prefer other genres, you would be hard-pressed not to find the beauty in this song.
