Australian chef shares easiest way to make perfect baked potatoes every time
If you’ve always been in charge of the cooking at home and are running out of ideas, why not go back to basics with simple ingredients? You don’t have to fill up your grocery cart or search the web for new and complex recipes to try. You can make do with what you have stored in your pantry and whip up something that doesn’t take up too much of your time.
Australian chef and cookbook author David Chilcott, popularly known as the “One Pot Chef”, reminds us of just how effortless certain meals can be with this crock-pot baked potatoes recipe.

Known for cooking a variety of delicious food with a crock-pot, the chef once more gave his followers a treat by demonstrating this easy-peasy recipe. While there are a ton of delicious dishes you can create with potatoes (the possibilities are seemingly endless, really!), David decides to go with the most common one and tweak the process a bit.
Most of us prepare baked potatoes almost the same way: wash the potatoes, poke with a fork, put on a baking tray, season, and pop in the oven.
That works, yes. Takes very little effort and time, but leaves us with a filling meal every time.
But The One Pot Chef switches things up a little with how he prepares and cooks the potatoes.
This might change the way you do things, too!
In line with his “less is more” approach, here’s a recipe you can easily follow and thank him for.
You’ll need the following ingredients:
• Potatoes
• Olive oil
• Salt
• Foil
• Slow cooker/Crock-pot
Here’s the fun part: doing it the way David does!
First, the usual: wash the potatoes. Then, poke holes with a fork or score the skin using a knife.
Once you’ve done that, it’s time to season the potatoes.
Brush the potatoes with olive oil and sprinkle salt on top.
This is a good way to draw the moisture out and help the potatoes absorb more flavor. This makes the potatoes crispy, too.
Then, take some aluminum foil sheets to fully cover your potatoes.
Instead of using the oven, bring out your trusty slow cooker.
Adjust the setting according to your preference. The “low” setting means a cooking time of up to 8 hours while the “high” setting takes approximately 4-5 hours.
How will you know if your potatoes are done? By simply testing them! Poke with a fork or a pair of kitchen scissors. If the potatoes are tender enough for you, you can take them out and plate them. If not, leave them for a few more minutes.
You’re probably thinking, “But there isn’t that much of a difference from oven-baked potatoes.” Well, we like to think this one is simpler in its own way and just as tasty as can be.
So why should you consider using a slow cooker for your meals? It’s handy, affordable, and easy to clean. You can save so much space with it, too. Also, cooking is easier. From whole chickens to snacks and hot beverages, you can make so much yummy stuff in your slow cooker.
Think convenience and ease of use. If you’ve got a long day ahead, simply leave the slow cooker on so you can come home to a warm, comforting, perfectly-cooked meal.
