There are rags to riches stories, and then there is Freddie Figgers. His journey from being a child that had nothing to a multi-millionaire is truly unique.

No one knows who Freddie Figgers’s birth parents are. But for some reason, they threw him into a dumpster just after he’d been born.

Luckily, some passersby heard his crying and investigated. They were able to hand the baby over to the authorities.

In just one day, the government was able to locate two adoptive parents for Figgers.

Figgers’s adoptive parents never shied away from Figgers’s shocking birth and abandonment story. But they always taught him one vital thing: despite his origins, he could go far. Figgers’s parents did all that they could to encourage him to follow his dreams.

When Figgers was nine years old, his parents bought him a computer. But the product was not working. Instead of letting his parents take the computer back to the manufacturer for a replacement, Figgers insisted that he could get it working himself.

Eventually, after taking the computer apart, he was able to get it running. In fact, Figgers still has that very computer in his office today as a reminder of what he can do when he tries hard.

Figgers’s talent for computers soon led to opportunities. When he was just 12 years old, he managed to get a job as a computer technician.

But when he was a little older, he decided to start his own business. At 15, he launched a cloud computing company for small businesses. Thanks to his innovation, local companies were able to save and recover their data.

As Figgers grew up, he realized that he could use his drive to help others.

His adoptive father developed dementia. Over the months and years, Figgers’s dad struggled more and more with once easy activities. Figgers wanted to help not just his father, but everyone like him.

The young man went to college, with a passion for tech and learning about how he could help people function with diseases like dementia. But Figgers was too ambitious for his college education.

While he was still studying, he got given a job offer to build a computer program. He realized that this job would teach him much more than he could learn sitting in a classroom.

In just four weeks, he’d built the computer program and earned $80,000. But Figgers knew that he could use this money to pursue his dream of helping people like his father.

So he developed a shoe that was much more than a piece of footwear.

Built into the shoe was a device for GPS tracking and two-way communication. Then he developed a phone that had a built-in wireless blood glucose meter. He later improved this phone so that it had a feature that prevents texting and driving.

Figgers’s company is now valued at $62 million. It’s also the only minority-owned telecommunications company in the USA.

It’s shocking to think that anyone could throw a baby into a dumpster. Figgers’s story shows just how awful it is. If he had not been found, he would have died. But instead, Figgers has been able to grow up into a highly successful individual.

Figgers has his own advice for anyone from a who wants to be successful:

“Believe in what you do. Don’t let anyone talk down to you. People will not see your vision. People will not believe in you. But just believe in yourself and keep thriving.”
