Taproom bar is the first in the world to house dogs rescued from kill shelters

The first thing you think of when you hear the word tap house is good food and drinks. Few would equate it with adopting a pet, but that is exactly what Fido’s Taphouse in Portland, Oregon brings to its customers. Opened in 2018, the establishment is seeking to change the way people look at the popular style of beer joint.

Inspired by the cat cafes found in Japan, the U.S., and other countries around the world, Fido’s Taphouse was started by Scott Porter. He wanted to build something similar to a cat café, but with dogs. He had to rework the idea of a cat café to take into account the high energy of many breeds of dogs. Instead of a café, he decided to go with a bar instead.

The location’s main attraction is the dogs it offers for adoption

And while the bar offers a selection of bar snacks and beers, its main attraction are the pooches. To meet and play with the dogs on the premises, patrons go to a separate doggy room. Housing up to eight dogs at any time, the bar offers dogs for adoption. Once a patron finds a dog that they like, they fill out the necessary paperwork and pick up their new pet a few days later.

The wait is to help ensure that the guests looking to adopt them actually do want them instead of making an impulsive decision based on having a few beers beforehand. This ensures that the dogs go to responsible owners that can and will provide for their needs. Since opening, Fido’s has helped find homes for over 70 dogs.

Paying it forward

After falling into a deep depression, he had contemplated suicide. He credits his dogs with helping him through it and saving his life. Without them, he probably wouldn’t be here today. In return for what his dogs did for him, he wants to help find new homes for as many dogs as he can.
