U.S. Air Force veteran had no one at his funeral so baseball team stepped in to be pallbearers

Soldiers should be remembered by their country. But not every man or woman who serves their country is so lucky. Some of them don’t have that many friends or family to remember them when they fall in battle or pass away during retirement.

Ralph Lambert is a retired USAF veteran, but not many people knew him.

He’s just one of many heroes who didn’t receive the recognition or remembrance he earned.

As shocking as it is, the truth is that many veterans have to live (and die) this way.

A study even found that millions of veterans in the U.S alone have no health insurance despite the sacrifices they made for their country.

In a perfect world, you would be repaid with healthcare and insurance for the immense service you give to your country. But we don’t live in a perfect world, and this is many veterans end up.

Lambert served in the Korean and Vietnam war. The man witnessed some horrible times, and did it twice.

The hero passed away in 2022, without any surviving family to be there.

It would seem that the end of Lambert’s story would see him die in obscurity – something much too sad for most of us to hear.

But there are good people in the world, and they always find their way to those who need them.

In a wonderful surprise, some senior students from the Holy Savior Menard baseball team arrived to be there for Lambert’s funeral.

It happened when the funeral home contacted them. After learning that Lambert had no family anymore, Joel Swisher of Hixson Brothers Funeral homes contacted the coach of the team.

He simply asked if any young men from the team could volunteer to assist with Lambert’s funeral.

The coach saw no reason to refuse. It was the least they could do to honor someone like sir Ralph Lambert.

After all, they owe their freedom to study and play baseball to people like Lambert. So they agreed and made it happen.

On February 19th, the six seniors served as pallbearers for the deceased USAF veteran.

Their names were Jackson Ford, Ashton Veade, Jacob Giordano, Cameron Kinder, Ashton Brodnax, and Hunter Foster. None of them knew Lambert in life, but they were still happy to provide this service for him.

Lambert was laid to rest in Louisiana State Veterans Cemetery in Leesville – by 6 young men who were thankful for his service but never met him.

What they did for Ralph Lambert was nothing short of exceptionally kind and heartwarming.

The type of gesture that’d make anyone smile.

It certainly got the attention of people around town, according to their coach.

“Well, I’ve had some phone calls and some emails and text messages from people that I don’t even know. A lot of bad things on the news these days and everybody was just kind of grateful to read something worth reading.”

Thank you, Ralph Lambert, for your service to your country. Even if you didn’t get recognition in your lifetime.

And hats off to the 6 boys from the baseball team who were there to lay him to rest. I’m sure Lambert would have been proud.
