Beagle high-tails it after getting whiff of “missing” owner in air and gets over 3M views

How far can a dog smell?

Even if they’ve spent months apart, can a dog still recognize their human parent’s smell?

That’s what Artem and Bianca, Bandit’s human parents, decided to test when Bianca came back home after being away for two months.

Will Bandit the beagle still recognize Bianca after being away for so long?

Have you ever seen a video of a man who was in the hospital for some time and lost a lot of weight in the process?

They were so worried that his precious dog wouldn’t recognize him anymore because he looks very different from before.

The man sat on a bench and waited for his friend to bring his dog around.

At first, the dog was unsure.

Who was this person? It looked like the dog recognized him but was really unsure.

The dog came closer, smelled the man, and instantly recognized his human dad.

Dogs have an incredible sense of smell.

They have 220 million olfactory receptors.

This helps them recognize and interpret a lot of their experiences.

That’s why dogs are often used as police dogs because of their keen sense of smell. They have a great sense of smell for two reasons.

One, when they breathe, some of the scents enter their “smelling chamber.”

This chamber takes care of identifying and understanding the scent.

That’s why, when there’s a person they need to find, police will give dogs a piece of an item they own so they can smell the scent and track it.

Dogs also have an additional organ called Jacobsen’s organ, which is located at the roof of the mouth close to the opening of the nasal cavity.

“[The Jacobsen’s organ] connects to the brain in such a way that it doesn’t require the ability to ‘smell’ but more the ability to ‘detect’ things in the air. Much like how an insect can’t smell but can detect,” Hiputee explained.

So, how’d Bandit do?

In this video, Bianca hid in the basement while Artem was outside playing with Bandit.

When Bandit comes back inside the house, will he be able to smell Bianca?

It’s time to test and see if he will. And do you know what? As soon as Bandit steps inside the house, he already knew something was up.

Bandit could smell something was up.

He started running around the house, looking for the smell. He ran to the front door and found no one there.

Bandit ran to the living room but no one was there either. Bandit ran across the kitchen and towards the bedrooms.

But Bandit takes a detour and runs to the basement instead.

Why would he do that?

It turns out he could smell Bianca hiding in the basement.

Bandit jumped on Bianca and gave her so many kisses. He couldn’t contain himself!

Apparently, dogs and smell are similar to Pavlov’s experiment. Dogs associate certain smells with certain emotions.

And in Bandit and Bianca’s case, Bandit has associated Bianca’s smell with something very loving and positive.

He knew when he found where that smell was coming from, Bandit was going to discover something great at the source.

How amazing is that?

See Bandit race through a maze of smells to find Bianca in the video below!
