When most people hear someone with incredible talent sing but who they’ve never seen before, they naturally envision an attractive man or woman. But when it comes to music, there are no boundaries. Take Susan Boyle as a prime example. When appearing on America’s Got Talent, the audience watched a dowdy woman take the stage. Then when she opened her mouth, her voice was pure angelic.

Jaten Dimsdale, who goes by Teddy Swims, has such a remarkable voice that his YouTube channel now has almost 900,000 subscribers. When he performed Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” the internet went wild. There he was, a rough and tough burly guy, complete with a beard and tattoos. Not at all what you’d expect.

In this particular performance, you first hear the soft sound of a piano playing. Then, you hear a sultry voice that’s immediately captivating. He’s so good, you want to stop what you’re doing just to listen to him sing. There are few artists that have that effect on people.

When you think about vocalists, Teddy isn’t the kind of person that would come to mind. He’s a rarity. With every word of the song, you can hear his emotion. You know the saying that some people wear their hearts on their sleeves. Well, Teddy sings from his heart with pure emotion.

He takes a different approach to music

For Teddy, it’s about making a connection to people. He firmly believes that every person should be viewed as an individual. But especially in the music industry, that’s not usually the case. As he puts it, “There are no categories, no stereotypes. Until we see every person as an individual, we will never reach unity.”

Regardless of the song he performs, it’s as though people have never heard it before. When he sang “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” you can hear his outstanding vocal range. Considering his size, he might expect a bass or baritone. Instead, he nails notes from high to low effortlessly.
