Betty White shares her secrets on "staying young" as she celebrates her 99th birthday
Betty White was born on January 17, 1922, in Oak Park, Illinois. She initially wanted to be a forest ranger, but women werenât allowed to enter the field at the time. But decades later, Betty White sort of fulfilled her dream when the U.S. Forest Service made her an honorary first ranger at 88 years old.

“I don’t like the other side,” White tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue. “The positive side is a lot more fun.”
Even though she could not reach her goal as a forest ranger at the time, Betty White eventually found success in radio as well as television. She continues to enjoy an illustrious career spanning over eight decades and counting, winning five Emmy Awards and playing memorable TV roles that endeared her to the nation.
Betty White first appeared in a 1945 short film titled âTime to Killâ where she played as the girlfriend of the character named Lou in the said short film. Betty Whiteâs roles as Sue Ann Nivens on âThe Mary Tyler Moore Showâ and the good-natured Rose Nylund in âThe Golden Girlsâ is what made her widely known at the television scene. She has also appeared in numerous talk shows and game shows on television.
Even though COVID-19 has spoiled her plans to run a mile, the actress has found something better to do in her 99th birthday. While talking with Entertainment Tonight, Betty White said that she is working on getting âThe Pet-Setâ re-released on her 99th birthday.
With her initial dream to become a forest ranger, without a doubt, she is an animal lover. Betty White hosted âThe Pet-Setâ in 1971 which aired 31 episodes. The show featured celebrities such as Doris Day, Carol Burnett, and Della Reese with their pets.
But some are not just house pets â we are talking about bears, cougars, elephants, gorillas, kangaroos, tigers and zebras â you name it. They talked about all things about animals including the wildlife preservation.
âBetty Whiteâs Pet Setâ will be re-released on streaming platforms and DVD on February 23, just in time for the showâs 50th anniversary.
Through the years, Betty White became an example of how to live well and live long.
“I am blessed with good health,” she notes simply, “so turning 99 is no different than turning 98.”
When asked what was her secret to staying young, Betty White answered the question as if it was just a simple question.
“A sense of humor,” she answered. “Don’t take yourself too seriously. You can lie to others â not that I would â but you cannot lie to yourself.”
Betty White will officially be a centenarian next year. She gave advice to those who want a good, long life and staying forever.
âAgain, having a sense of humor,â she said. âJust looking at the positive side and not dwelling on the downside. Takes up too much energy being negative. Also having a good agent who keeps me busy all the time.â
