Dog gets his first “freedom run” after living on a chain for years

Animal advocate Amy Hines was visiting Kentucky in 2016 when she saw a Siberian Husky chained up outside with no shelter from the elements.

And whatever else she saw helped her discern than the dog had rarely, if ever, been let off that chain.

As a staff member at Dogs Deserve Better, she knew that if she could rescue that pup she could give it a better life.

According to the website ILoveMyDogSoMuch, she spoke to the owner and convinced them to let her take the Husky as well as 8 other dogs on the property.

Many of them had frostbitten paws from winters left outside with no heat or protection – and it was February so another storm was coming.

Over the next couple of weeks, she got them into a rescue shelter where they slept with a roof above their heads and beds underneath them for the first time.

On February 26th, Dogs Deserve Better posted the following message:

“HOURS after that massive snowstorm hit last week, the last 2 Kentucky dogs were finally rescued and brought to Virginia with their 6 buddies. This rescue took 2 months and over 4500 miles traveled by multiple dedicated rescuers. Today, Biscuit and Benjamin made their first “Freedom Runs” chain free in our 6-acre field. It was spectacular.”

That rescue happened to be the former site of NFL player Michael Vick’s dogfighting operation, Bad Newz Kennels in Virginia.

But since it was dismantled after his arrest, Dogs Deserve Better has helped turn it into the Good Newz Rehab Center.

It was there that the Husky called Biscuit got his first chance to see a big, open field all for himself.

As a handler took him through the gates, Biscuit was released to run free and spend the time he wanted stretching his legs in a 6-acre field.

And let’s just say he took full advantage of his opportunity.

Biscuit took off, running around in no particular direction.

Then, of course, he found a spot to pee, but after that, it was more exploring.

It’s heartbreaking to think that he spent years unable to run like that.

In February of 2016, he went up for adoption with the following information:

“I am BISCUIT! I am a male, approximately 2 year-old, drop dead gorgeous husky looking for love. I was rescued off of the chain with my 8 buddies and brought to the Good Newz Rehab Center operated by Dogs Deserve Better.
I love long romps in the field and treats! I am exceptionally smart and know basic commands. I do know how to “come”, I just choose not to do so when my nose is to the ground and I am busy doing more important things.”

It didn’t take long for the stunning dog to find a forever home that would allow him the freedom to run and treat him with the dignity he deserves.

Just look how happy this guy looked in his brand new forever home, surrounded by love!

Dogs Deserve Better is still up and running and needs financial support to keep doing this work. Animal lovers can here to help them out with a tax-deductible donation, which can start at just $5 a month!
