Seconds after approaching the congregation audience, blind boy with autism has them mesmerized
Autism has many sub-types as a broad spectrum disorder. Influenced by genetic and environmental factors, each sub-type results in a distinct set of strengths and struggles for each person diagnosed with the disorder. Autism occurs with a wide range of circumstances characterized by challenges with social skills and speech and nonverbal communication. The development of autism or ASD in children can be attributed to several factors. Often, it is also accompanied by other medical issues and sensory sensitivities. The first signs of autism usually begin to show at around the age of 2, but some developmental delays may appear even earlier. Early intervention is key. It is a good thing that ASD can be diagnosed as early as 18 months.
It is important to be properly educated about autism.
Learning about the disorder allows us to understand the behaviors of a person with autism. More importantly, it helps us create an environment that is safe enough for them to thrive. (Source: AutismSpeaks)
One amazing example of the potential of a person with ASD is Christopher Duffley.
Christopher was only ten years old, back in 2014, when he walked on stage to perform. Nobody had expected that he would amaze the crowd who welcomed him with cheers and loud applause.
He also happens to be blind. Born prematurely, he was rendered blind when the blood vessels in his eyes failed to develop properly when he was outside his mother’s womb.
Living with autism and blindness is very difficult. Christopher’s confidence and positive temperament on stage though do not reveal any of that difficulty at all. This young fellow grew up loving singing.
Christopher was already singing before he could even hold a proper conversation.
He discovered the microphone at a very young age of four.
Christopher grew up surrounded by positive family members and supportive friends. It is evident in how he carries himself. He is confident and composed on stage. His manners urge the audience to pay attention and look forward to what he has to offer.
After a brief introduction, the young man was ready to sing.
The piano played a beautiful melody that filled the room. Standing patiently, Christopher took a deep breath and then began to sing.
“Open the eyes of my heart, Lord… Open the eyes of my heart. I want to see You, I want to see You…”
His strong and clear voice resounded through the room.
In his heart, he knew the words. He kept with the rhythm of the musical accompaniment. Standing tall, he sang his praise.
“To see you high and lifted up
Shining in the light of Your glory
Pour out Your power and love
As we sing holy, holy, holy…”
This young man’s confidence and impressive talent is the perfect example of the truth behind the saying, “The only disability in life is a bad attitude.”
Not surprisingly, this particular video went viral. It didn’t take long until Christopher became a YouTube sensation.
Christopher has since recorded two albums. Aside from performing at corporate and ministry events, he also creates and engineers interviews.
Watch Christopher’s performance and prepare to be captured by his angelic singing voice.
