Blind bison was shunned by others until one sweet calf came along that changed everything

One of the most cherished things we can have in life is a good friend. Not just any friend, but someone who’ll stick by your side through thick and thin. When it comes to friendships, most people relate to humans. But animals develop close ties as well.
This is what happened to a blind bison by the name of Helen. Without her sight, she struggled to get around. She also had a hard time making connections with other animals on the farm. But things changed thanks to a sweet calf named Oliver.
Just as with humans, friendships between animals helps them maneuver through life.
One of Helen’s challenges is that she didn’t trust any of the other animals, and you can’t blame her. Blind, she was extremely guarded, leaving her isolated and lonely. Then one day, everything changed. A Jersey calf called Oliver let Helen know that he wasn’t there to hurt her but to be her friend. Since then, the two have been inseparable.

They live on a beautiful farm in Oregon.
These two best buddies live together at the Light House Farm Sanctuary located in Scio. Along with Helen and Oliver are more than 200 additional animals. All of them, including horses, cows, sheep, pigs, goats, and even chickens have experienced some form of abuse or neglect. When Helen first arrived, it was obvious that she’d had a rough life even though she was still young.

Watching the two of them play is so fun.
On any given day, Helen and Oliver aren’t lying around the grassy pasture, although they do that as well. Instead, they’re busy exploring and playing. However, it took Helen a little bit of time before she fully trusted her new friend. Oliver was persistent and it paid off.

Helen and Oliver share a very special bond.
Even though Helen has no eyesight, in a way, she began to act like a second mother to Oliver. Here they are…two different breeds of animals and significantly different in size but that didn’t matter. Somehow, they knew they needed each other.

Oliver’s mom played an important role in the development of their friendship.
Every day, Betsy, Oliver’s mother, would walk him over to where Helen stood. As one of the workers at the farm stated, “I catch them grooming each other, which is amazing because I don’t think Helen has ever had the opportunity to express that motherly instinct before.”

Helen began to take on some of Oliver’s characteristics.
Spending so much time together, it’s not surprising that Helen began to change. Instead of acting and looking like a baby buffalo, she was more like a calf. Not only was her personality lining up with Oliver’s but even her hair color changed to match his.

Rather than spend her days alone, possibly depressed and scared, Helen now has a new lease on life thanks to a tiny calf. Because of their friendship, she’s even opened up to other animals on the farm. This is proof that two opposites can have a remarkable friendship if they try. The Light House Farm Sanctuary is all about freeing abused and neglected animals from fear, pain, and oppression.
