Blind and deaf dog makes it his mission to comfort every foster pet that comes into his home
Dogs are incredibly loving animals, but this dog must be the most loving of them all.
At first sight, Sherio looks like an incredibly adoptable puppy. He’s cute, happy and adorable.
But for a long time, nobody wanted him. Sherio has two medical conditions that put many potential owners off. He is deaf and partially blind.
In fact, the dog had been to two shelters, taken to 12 foster homes and adopted by four different families in two years. Somehow, every adopter changed their minds and gave him up again.
Despite this, Sherio remained a loving and compassionate dog.
Luckily, Sheryl Smith, who has been looking after foster animals for a very long time, took him into her home, initially on a temporary basis. But Sheryl soon saw that Sherio was a very special dog indeed.
He didn’t have an angry bone in his body. And he just loved spending time around her other foster animals.
Sheryl first noticed that Sherio was loving to not just humans but other animals when she was petting a foster kitten in her lap.
Sherio just trotted right up to the kitten and tried to kiss her better. The kitten was confused, but eventually, she calmed down.
Sheryl had already made it her mission to make as many foster animals as possible feel loved. Then she realized that Sherio was really helping her achieve that goal. So she decided to adopt him forever. And this time it would be forever!
But Sherio’s years of being abandoned again and again have left some psychological damage. Whenever Sheryl puts him in her car, he starts whining. He associates cars with his former owners taking him to the shelter, so he can’t help himself. Luckily, Sheryl would never abandon Sherio.
And whenever Sheryl brings home a new foster pet, the same thing happens.
Sherio gets excited and wants to give the animal kisses. Some of the foster animals hate this, but he keeps it up until they know that they’re welcome in his and Sheryl’s home.
Sherio’s attentiveness goes far.
Once, Sheryl brought home a pregnant dog who was very sick. Sherio could tell that the mother was ill. So when she had her puppies, Sherio cuddled with them and cleaned them for the mother.
And the foster animals never fail to form a bond with Sherio. Some take longer than others, but Sherio never gives up.
“They trust him before they trust me.” – Sheryl Smith.
But perhaps the most heartwarming thing Sherio has ever done was comfort a malnourished kitten called Tiny Tolley back to health.
When this kitten came into Sheryl’s home, she was stick thin. Sherio refused to leave Tiny Tolley’s side, protecting her until she gained strength.
At first, Tiny Tolley was scared of Sherio. But she soon grew to trust him.
Within weeks, the kitten was up to full health and roaming the home confidently. And if it weren’t for Sherio’s dedication, the animal might not have pulled through.
Sherio must be one of the best dogs that there is, even if he does have a habit of getting into trouble:
But for all of the naughty things that Sherio does, there are around 20 good things. Sheryl knows that she and the foster animals that come to her home are lucky indeed!
