Blind, deaf rescue dog helps his owner comfort every foster pet she brings home

Meet Shiro, the blind and deaf rescue dog who spends his days nurturing all of the foster animals his mom brings home. The rescue dog’s mom, Sheryl Smith, has helped countless animals over the years that no one else wanted to.

She doesn’t aim for the cutest, cuddliest creatures that everyone vies for. Instead, she spends her energy rescuing animals with injuries, deformities, disabilities, and trauma. In other words, she rescues the “unadoptable” and finds them their forever home.

Shiro’s story stretches further back than his time with Sheryl, though, and his trials have tempered him to be one of the best therapy dogs for other animals the world has ever seen.

Shiro had a rough start to life. By the time that Sheryl learned of him, the rescue dog had already been the resident of two animal shelters and no less than twelve different foster homes. If that weren’t enough to break Sheryl’s heart, she then learned that the blind and deaf dog had already been adopted before… a total of four times!

Tragically, Shiro had to suffer the pain of being rejected and returned by four different families that had vowed to love him forever. That was the arrow through the heart for Sheryl, and she decided then and there that she would be adopting Shiro herself.

The rescue dog was finally going to learn what having a forever family was really all about.

He was a handful but everyone else had given up on him and we weren’t prepared to do that too. He still to this day cries in the car because he thinks he’s being dropped off somewhere else,” explains Sheryl in an interview with The Dodo.

Sheryl has continued to help Shiro work through his trauma from being rejected for so long and he’s turned out to be an amazing rescue dog.

Being that the sweet pup has already been through so much in life, it makes him the perfect candidate to be his human’s helper. Though he still struggles with anxiety, he is an amazing comfort to the wide variety of animals that come through his mom’s foster home.

Just after his rescue l rescued a pregnant dog who was too sick to care for her pups, so Shiro climbed in with them and started cleaning them. He’s done that with every rescue I take in. He will just sit patiently with the feral cats/kittens and bonds so strongly with them, they trust him before they trust me,” Sheryl glows about her rescue dog.

Recently, a feral kitty came into Sheryl and Shiro’s care.

Sheryl named the kitten Tiny Tolley. The poor thing was so malnourished that it wasn’t clear at first if she would make a recovery. According to Sheryl, if the kitten hadn’t been found when it was, it likely wouldn’t have. This is something that Shiro seemed to understand the moment he met the kitty.

Shiro never left her crate for a second. He knew she was so sick and so scared and that she needed to be comforted, recalled Sheryl.

Under Shiro’s watchful eye, the kitten slowly began to recover and regain strength. While Tiny Tolley is still timid, Shiro just can’t help himself. He has to be near her and loving on her, even when the kitten is trying to get snuggles from Sheryl.

Sheryl managed to capture photographic evidence of Shiro’s obsession with loving on Tolley and uploaded it to a Facebook group with a caption that read:

One of my deaf vision impaired rescues…tried to comfort a newly rescued kitten..he looks pleased with himself..but the poor kitty looks even more terrified than she did before…she has no idea what just slapped her in the face.

Though Shiro caught Tolley off guard with his surprise smooches, something tells us she’ll forgive him, in the end.

Sheryl’s post went viral, getting over 40,000 shares just since she uploaded it less than a month ago. Tiny Tolley is continuing to grow and regain her health with the help of Shiro and his mom. Once she’s fully recovered, Sheryl will set to work finding her furrever family. In the meantime, she will be hanging out with the rescue dog that saw her through her sickness and fear.

It’ll be a sad day when the two have to separate, but Shiro will have his paws full giving the same tender love and care to all the other foster animals mom brings home.
