Can you imagine living each day without sight?

Our eyes, just like our other senses, are essential for us to go about our day smoothly and comfortably.

Even simple tasks such as eating or going to the bedroom would be complicated if one cannot see their way.

Vision, when lost, will leave a person disabled and possibly needing a helping hand.

What would it be like for a dog to lose sight?

Dogs are known for their energy and playfulness.

They move around, run all day, and are ready for a game of tag at any time.

Given their nature of being overly active, it would be so difficult for pups to lose their sense of sight and depend on others.

Blind humans are able to seek help from other people, but blind animals such as dogs find it challenging to find a friend to be their eyes.

It is fortunate for one dog named Spike to have a friend like Max.

Spike is a dog with cataracts on both eyes, leaving him unable to see.

The eight-year-old pup has been struggling with moving around because of his condition but he is lucky to have such a dependable friend.

His companion’s name is Max, and he is a cat who has been acting as Spike’s eyes every day.

Both animals are eight years old and have been living together since their birth.

Since both of them live outdoors, Spike has depended on Max who works as his “seeing eye” and helps him to function normally by guiding him.

This dog and cat’s friendship is amazing.

Seeing the two animals together is incredible. Spike trusts Max completely and the cat consistently aids his friend in everything he does.

Their partnership is one that is built on love and trust and we are all inspired by their unique relationship.

After realizing that they could no longer provide for the needs of both animals, their owners decided to surrender them to a shelter where they could be looked after better.

Both animals were given to the Saving Grace Animal Society.

“We got a call [regarding] an older dog and a cat on their property that they said, given these colder temperatures, they just weren’t sure if they were having the right quality of life and they were able to provide for them as best as they could,” Executive Director Erin Deems shared with Global News.

The shelter staff recognized the connection between the pup and the cat and their beautiful friendship.

Whenever they take them out to walk, Max would usually lead the way with Spike closely behind him, sniffing and following his friend’s scent.

The two animals were loveable but having them adopted would not be easy for the shelter.

Because of Spike’s condition as well as the fact that he and Max lived outdoors most of their lives, it would be a challenge to train them on living indoors.

Their age also was a major factor that might keep people from choosing to adopt them.

Despite these worries, Spike and Max were still put up for adoption after being checked by the vets.

People in the shelter expected a long time of waiting for both Spike and Max, but they were mistaken.

Staff at the shelter were sure that both animals would be waiting longer than others because of various factors and based on their experience.

However, they were proven wrong when Spike and Max were chosen about a week after arriving at the shelter!

This only proves that kindness is still out there. Spike and Max now live in Manitoba in their forever home.
