Blind dog can finally see after surgery, watch as he “meets” his family for the first time

It must be absolutely terrible for your eyesight to be taken away from you, and that counts for both us humans as animals like dogs. Unfortunately, the Irish Terrier who listens to the name Duffy was diagnosed with diabetes a while ago, and it had terrible effects on his health.

Duffy was eight years old when he got diabetes, and his condition caused him to lose his eyesight in just a couple of months.

Not only was it a terrible experience for the pooch himself, but his owners were also left heartbroken by his sudden loss of sight.

“Within about three to five months he went from a totally normal eight-year-old dog to a dog who was completely blind,” Duffy’s owner Benjamin May wrote on Reddit.

“It broke my heart seeing this dog I grew up with … running into things, not being able to recognise me.”

Unfortunately, dogs going blind is something that many owners have to struggle with. We often wonder if the dogs are still happy if they can’t see anymore, and it’s even worse if they once were once able to see.

However, according to Petsdoc.org, blind dogs can still lead fulfilling and happy lives, but their environment has got to be adjusted and they need to be comfortable.

“The owner may need to make some adjustments in the pet’s environment. Some of these adjustments include fencing the yard, taking leashed walks, and not leaving unusual objects in the dog’s normal pathways. Obviously, most blind dogs cannot navigate stairs very well. When blind dogs are in their normal environment, most people don’t know they are blind,” the website states.

Even though a blind dog can be content and happy, Duggy was clearly not the same as before. From one day to the next, he was able to see his owners and suddenly had that taken away from him. It must’ve been incredibly confusing and disorienting for Duffy, and the pup understandably lost his smile.

There are a couple of instances of humans regaining their eyesight (partially), and Duffy’s owners still had hope as there are similar treatments for animals.

After all, science has come very far, especially medical science. Benjamin had hope when a vet told him that Duffy qualified for an eye surgery that would be able to restore his eyesight.

Benjamin didn’t hesitate for a second, even though the surgery would be expensive and wasn’t a guarantee in any way. It took place in Malvern, Pennsylvania at the Veterinary Referral Center.

Luckily, the procedure went extremely well.

Duffy’s owner started filming when the four-footer came out of surgery, and the footage speaks more than a thousand words. The pup seems to have found his energy and excitement again (just look at how fast his tail is wagging!) and the difference is absolutely enormous.

For the first time in months, Duffy was finally able to lay eyes on his family again and his reaction is absolutely amazing, touching and heartwarming. You can hear his cries of joy and excitement, as Duffy probably couldn’t understand what was going on.

Duffy was being treated by Dr. Kevin Kumrow and Dr. Brady Beale. The latter performed eye surgery on the pup, while Dr. Kumrow treated his diabetes condition. Thanks to these two doctors, Duffy finally feels like he has his life back again.
