Sometimes the universe has a way to get you what you need at just the right time. It could be the love of your life at the moment you finally stop looking, maybe a pet you didn’t know you needed, or something completely different. You just never know.

For Eryn, it was a domino effect that brought her what she needed.

Eryn lives in the suburbs with a backyard that goes right into the woods. So she lives very close to nature and is used to having wild animals around the house. A family of raccoons was a common sight for her, and some would come around to find food.

In 2009 a roughed-up looking raccoon showed up. Eryn could tell something was different with this guy by the way he walked with apprehension. When he raccoon made its way to her porch, it was then close enough for Eryn to see its eyes. It had the reflective green look in its eyes that are common with raccoons at night, but this was day time.

“His eyes shone bright green during the day. He was at least partially blind, walked into things, and was afraid of the wind, high grass, birds, and snow,” Eryn said.

Eryn was very kind to all the raccoons, but she wanted to make sure that this raccoon was taken care of since it would be hard for it to flourish in the wild with its limited eyesight.

She had made the connection that his eyes shine green during the day because he has a problem with his tapetum lucidum. He was either born with it, or it developed later in his life.

The raccoon knew where to find an easy meal, now that Eryn was feeding him.

“He comes to eat around 6:30-7 AM almost every morning. He sits on the back porch steps and waits in front of the kitchen window. He sometimes paces from the porch steps to the backdoor until somebody sees him.
He sometimes comes back for seconds and thirds throughout the day.”

After this routine for many years, in 2014 and to Eryn’s surprise, the blind raccoon showed up with two black kittens in tow. He brought these two lost souls to get a meal that they could all enjoy together.

Eryn would feed the raccoon his favorite meal, big fluffy pasta noodles in cream of chicken soup or beef soup/gravy. He also often had hot dogs sliced up and added to the dish. The kittens also enjoyed the large family-style meals.

The trio would show up for meals and then disappear into the woods.

This went on for six months, until in June of 2015, when the old blind raccoon died. He had been coming to the house for 4-5 years. Considering that most raccoons only live 2-3 years, he lived a very long life.

Eryn couldn’t stop thinking about the two kittens. She was sad that they lost their friend and became determined to give them a permanent home.

“I tamed the wild kittens (that was painful) and WAS going to send them to PAWS Chicago, but after putting in all of that effort, loss of flesh and blood WE KEPT THEM & they now live inside with our HUGE other cat Squirt. They officially became ours on December 14, 2014, when we got them fixed & chipped. PAWS did it for FREE because we guaranteed that they would have a forever home. They estimated that they were about 6 months old.”

She wouldn’t know it yet, but the two black kittens would turn out to be the best support for Eryn.

Tragically, Eryn’s mom passed away from the flu, and her 15-year cat also died just 9 days later. It was a lot to deal with in a very short amount of time. Having the two kittens around to take care of and train, were a therapeutic distraction from the trauma.

Before Eryn’s mother passed away, she had wanted to adopt the two kittens herself.

“It makes me sad, but she would have LOVED to watch them. They are very different than any cats that we have ever had. They use A LOT of tail communication. It’s so weird. And they play fight constantly. They are still a little skittish & when I am not home they often hide.”

It was a beautiful way the universe set up the domino effect of care. The blind raccoon found Eryn. The kittens found the raccoon, and then the kittens found Eryn. Life works out pretty well when we are all there for each other. Both animals and humans alike.
