Solo drummer sparks incredible flash mob in the streets of Verona, Italy
Italy is known for being a work of art. Truly, their entire culture is built on beauty and expression. Therefore, it shouldn’t be too hard to imagine a musical flash mob happening in the middle of a town, full of tourists, of course.
That’s exactly what happened in 2014 when six different bands came together to fill the air with the sounds of their instruments.
It’s safe to say they pulled it off. The crowd encloses around the band fairly quickly and their attention doesn’t appear to waver.
The video currently has over 5 million views and over 25,000 likes. Needless to say, it’s doing quite well. Though it was posted in 2014, it still receives comments to this day.
Like flash mob videos before it, they show the member of the ‘mob’ getting ready to shock passersby. The cool thing about this video is how the band members travel from different areas of the city, by boat, to reach their destination.
Only in Italy, of course. Everything has to be done with a bit of flare and it’s amazing.
Oddly, there was, what looks to be, a cop car involved with the production. The men inside resemble the Blues Brothers. They wear dark sunglasses, hats, and suits.
As a drum beats steadily in the background, several band members make their way across town, carrying their instruments with them. It truly looks like they are preparing for battle rather than preparing to play for the townspeople.
A drummer marches to the beat of his own drum as he plays his snare drum while marching down the street. At the same time, one of the “brothers” is making his way to the man by car. He gets out and begins to approach the drummer.
Onlookers hold their breaths as they come face-to-face. But instead of something drastic, the brother takes out a pair of sunglasses and slides them onto the drummer’s face. He also gives him a hat too. As a result, the crowd laughs.
The blues brother walks away and begins to conduct the drummer. Suddenly, more drummers appear. The percussion line begins to play in unison. Shortly after, they are accompanied by clarinets and flutes.
As the battle wages on, they receive backup by the brass section, who arrive by boat. As soon as their boat docks, they rush ahead for the mainland. Just in time, they reach the balcony and begin to blow into their horns.
Of course, no one sees them coming since they move so stealthily. When they begin playing, onlookers look up in surprise. Luckily, this wasn’t an attack.
Eventually, more horn players gather on a bridge and some are on the ground with the drums, clarinets, and flutes. The band is in full swing now! Fittingly, they play, The Blues Brothers, “Peter Gunn Theme.”
Ironically, the band members wear regular clothes to not draw attention to themselves. That way, they easily blend in with the crowd. Well, partially, at best. So many people lugging around instruments at the same time is going to draw some attention.
All in all, it was a wonderfully planned and executed performance. The crowd really seems to enjoy the show.
