Researchers find the personality trait they believe makes the best type of friend

As we get older, we realize that we only need a few special people and real friends in our lives. Those who are there whenever we need someone to lean on, to listen, and sometimes be brutally honest.

In every relationship, honesty is perhaps a very important element to keep your bond strong and healthy. However, not everyone can be totally honest with you all the time, especially if they need to tell you something that can be hurtful.

Tough love works.

There will be moments when you’re not making the wrong decisions but that’s okay because your blunt friends will be there to straighten you up. Always remember that your truest friends will always tell you what you need to hear.

We benefit from a variety of social interactions to keep our social energies flowing. Just as much as we need kindness and compassion, we also need someone who can be always honest with us.

Here are five reasons why having a blunt friend (or best friend) is very important:

1. They tell you the hard truth

Knowing the absolute truth and accepting it can be quite difficult. Tough love is about telling someone exactly what they need to hear, even if they don’t want to hear it. That means that when your blunt friend tries to enlighten you then that means that they know what they’re talking about.

2. They push you to be better

Your blunt friends will never lie to you and spare you from the truth because they care about you and they want you to be better. You would know when someone is a true friend if they care about your well-being.

When it comes to other people’s shortcomings, most people find it hard to inform their friends what needs to be improved.

When you surround yourself with friends like this, your life will completely change. You become more positive, driven, and focused on your priorities,” adds lifestyle and business expert Chalene Johnson.

3. You will always know that they want to be your friend

The best thing about blunt people is that they are honest. So if they hang out with you then that means that they really like you and want to be friends.

Straightforward people will prefer not to hang out with people they don’t like. So when they become your friend then you don’t have to second guess their true intentions.

4. They’re not afraid to apologize

They will tell you the cold harsh truth, but they will always follow it up with an apology just to tone it down a notch. Being blunt is often associated with being rude, so blunt friends know how to take responsibility for their words.

5. They will always hear you out

Just because they’re blunt doesn’t mean that they won’t respect your views. Being a true friend means knowing their limitations, they will only share their opinions and thoughts and stop at that. They simply want to give you a piece of their mind and advice before you make a decision.
