Woman captures video of clever cat helping her get into the house when she locks herself out

In 2018, Gabby Tropea took in a stray cat she found on her college campus in Austin, Texas.

“In retrospect, I probably shouldn’t have picked up a visibly ill stray cat, but I did …,” she told Mashable.

She named him Boko and after nursing him back to health the two became inseparable.

He even goes for car rides!

But one day in 2019, Tropea decided to walk her sister Isabella to school and managed to get locked out of her house. She had left her keys at home and didn’t realize her sister had set the lock behind her.

When she tried the front door, it wouldn’t budge – she could hear Boko calling to her on the other side.

She Snapchatted in good humor about the incident while stuck outside her home.

“I got to the front door and Boko could hear me trying to get in,” she told The Dodo. “He started crying and scratching at the door.”

Then she decided to go around to the back of the house and try the patio door, but there was a stick in the track to prevent it from being slid open.

However, Boko really wanted his mom back in the house, so he tried to help out. Soon, Tropea realized that she might be able to get some help from her furry friend.

“He started rubbing his face on the stick and I was encouraging him to mess with it. I was coaching him to lift it up,” she said. “He understood what I was trying to tell him and he started lifting it up!”

Once she realized the cat might be able to let her in, she started recording Boko’s heroic deed.

On February 17th, 2019 she Tweeted out the video – and the original has been viewed over 7.2 MILLION times since then.

That’s because Boko is the real MVP!

He gnaws and scratches at the rod – he wants that thing OUT. And he manages to dislodge it!

Tropea can be heard in the background encouraging him to go for it and laughing heartily when he actually accomplished the feat.

Of course, not every cat would be so willing to help out their human.

People on Twitter added their own stories, proving that most cats could care less if their owners are locked out – unless maybe it’s mealtime.

Not all cats can be Boko.

And don’t worry, the very good cat was richly rewarded after the 10-minute ordeal.

“He was so proud of himself when I got in and I gave him a couple treats,” Tropea told The Dodo. “He was all clingy and snuggly after that for a good while.”

So he should be – he certainly deserved to be congratulated and thanked for his good deed.

It looks like these two truly are best friends and that cats really can solve problems – when they want to. We never had any doubt they were clever, of course, we just wonder how much they care to help us.

What would your cat do in such a situation? We’re not sure many have Boko’s dexterity, even if they have his will.
