Dogs rescued from meat market meet their loving new dad for the first time
After being saved from the meat trade, two sweet bonded bulldogs earned a second shot at life by finally finding a home that wants them.
Rescuers from Harbin SHS Animal Rescue discovered Backpack, Toad, and 11 other dogs. According to Rachel Hinman, all 13 of the canines were meant for the meat trade and had been abandoned on a property in China.
It was the most ridiculous thing!
All of the ill, neglected dogs on the property were about to be given to the meat industry by the loanshark, but Rachel and her crew intervened to save the poor dogs.
Fortunately, the team made it just in time! Backpack and Toad were two of the unfortunate puppies and Backpack was actually on the verge of dying since she was so sick and frail.
They were in such bad conditions.
Thankfully, with the right medical attention, she was able to survive. Although Toad was slightly healthier, he still needed some care as well.
In the end, the group was able to help all 13 dogs find permanent homes, but the rescuers didn’t want Backpack and Toad to be split apart. It seemed like they were sisters because of the strong, loving relationship the two had.
So the volunteers did just that.
Volunteers from Harbin SHS Animal Rescue searched for a household that would take both dogs rather than separate them. Fortunately, they were able to contact Jed Ballou in the United States.
Jed is interested in adopting both Backpack and Toad and resides in the Seattle region of Washington State. He was prepared to undergo the lengthy process to adopt the girls.
They wanted to see if everyone will get along just fine.
The first time the two puppies met Jed was around a year after they were saved, and it was a big success! Toad and Jed hit it off right away when they first met in Los Angeles, California.
Despite everything she had gone through, she was sweet, trusting, and just eager for someone to shower her with affection.
Backpack was more hesitant than Toad.
But with her sister’s assistance, she felt secure enough to follow Jed and begin her new life.
Jed said that Backpack and Toad were “totally clueless to everything that a typical domesticated dog would be aware of” when he first brought them home. He didn’t force them into anything they weren’t ready for or comfortable with.
Instead, he let them “figure things out.”
Because of what they had to go through before being rescued, he was aware before adopting them that they wouldn’t behave like other dogs, but he is still prepared to provide them with the care and attention they require to successfully navigate their difficulties.
Backpack and Toad have been a part of Jed’s life for more than a year, and they have been saved from the meat trade for more than two years. While Backpack continues to struggle from the trauma she had as a puppy, Toad has seamlessly adapted to life with a caring owner.
Jed said that Backpack has severe anxiety.
She needs medication to help her live better despite his best efforts and his affection for her.
The two are making the most of their new home, new family, and fresh opportunity in life thanks to the fact that Toad is right there by her side to help her feel more comfortable.
