Couple bored in quarantine build amazing ‘catio’ playground for their furry friends

These are without a doubt, very strange and troubling times. Even though the lockdown restrictions around the world are starting to get gradually looser, it’s still recommended to stay home as much as possible. Of course, quarantine was much stricter when the outbreak first began, and with the majority of the world being confined to their homes, people tend to get bored.

Holli Bennett and her husband Roger were able to spend a whole lot of time at home with their cats.

They quickly came up with an idea: they wanted to build a new place for their three kitties to hang around in.

It actually became quite the project which they call a ‘catio’, an amazing playground where every feline four-footer would just love to spend their days in.

The couple started building an outdoor sanctuary. As soon as they got the basics and the frame set up, they started decorating it with tons of accessories, lights, real grass, ladders and there’s even a cool hammock in there as well! Cats love to swing around in it, but it’s actually a great spot for Holli to spend some time with the felines.

“Now that my kids are grown up, the cats are my babies,” the 39-year-old woman from North Carolina said to Tyla.com.

Holli has her own DIY company and definitely isn’t scared to get her hands dirty every now and then. Having a patio was something that she’s always wanted, and now she and her husband had plenty of time to build one.

“I’ve always wanted to do a cat patio since I started keeping cats two years ago. I would love it if they could go and roam the streets, but they could get stolen or hit by a car or be attacked by a coyote or hawk. I finally decided to build one in lockdown, because I had the time and because of the warm weather.”

Holli felt a bit sad that the three rescue cats were basically confined to the inside of their home all the time, and figured that they could use a dedicated spot in the garden too.

“We have a pool which we’ve been spending lots of time in and the cats would be at the backdoor, looking out longingly – I felt so guilty that they couldn’t enjoy what we could. The cats are obsessed with their new catio: they love it. They never come in now.”

“They’re always outside and I have to bring them through into the house at night. It’s kind of a little playground for them.”

Cheeto, Nacho, and Queso, the couple’s three cats, absolutely love their catio!

The frame is built out of wood, but there’s a concrete foundation to make the whole thing sturdy enough. There is plastic sheeting on the roof which should keep everything dry. Decorating the outdoor patio was obviously the fun part.

“I wanted it to be jungle-like, and I wanted them to feel that they were really outside,” Holli recalls.

The final result looks absolutely amazing!

The green touches of grass en ferns definitely make the whole thing go for a jungle-like aesthetic, and there’s plenty of stuff to do here for these three lucky kitties.

“I put the hammock in there because I want to read with them there and I want to meditate with them there too.”

It also looks great at night thanks to the LED lights.

The couple built their ‘catio’ for less than 200 dollars.

Luckily, the couple already had some materials laying around that they could easily repurpose, but it’s still pretty cool to see what you can build with a small budget.

We’re pretty sure that Cheeto, Nacho, and Queso are absolutely delighted with their new outdoor accommodation!
