Hearts melt as young boy picks old, deaf shelter dog to be his new best friend
Unfortunately, there can be a time for families when they’re no longer able to care for their pets and have to leave them behind. Shey, an adorable 14-year-old miniature poodle, was taken in by the Animal Rescue League of Iowa after his family moved away and could no longer care for him.
The senior pup was dealing with a number of difficulties and health issues, almost all of them due to his senior age. The four-footer is completely deaf and is also blind in one eye.
The shelter staff figured that Shey would have a very, very hard time getting adopted.
And that turned out to be true, as Shey was in the shelter for months constantly being rejected by families because of his medical condition as well as his age.
That is, until one day, a young boy Tristan arrived at the shelter along with his mom.
Tristan’s demands were quite simple: they wanted a dog that loved to cuddle.
Shey was an absolutely perfect match and the two fell in love with each other from the very beginning.
“Shey is super sweet and wants to be near people all the time,” Jessica Jorgenson, who works with the shelter said to The Dodo. “Shey was very comfortable with Tristan from the beginning.”
“He understood that Shey couldn’t hear what was going on and might not be able to see things clearly, so he was very slow with his actions,” Jessica added. “He was just very respectful of what Shey could and couldn’t handle.”
Due to his condition, Shelter needed some special care, but Tristan was more than willing to provide him with that.
Dealing with a deaf and almost blind pup certainly isn’t an easy task, let alone for a child. However, Tristan listened carefully and took his phone to record the conversation with specialists to make sure he could always take proper care of his new best friend. He also opened up his calendar app to keep track of future vet visits and vaccinations. The shelter staff was convinced that Shey would be in capable hands!
“He was so mindful of Shey’s special needs. Tristan is very mature for his age and asked a ton of questions.”
Now that Tristan and Shey are together, they can’t stop snuggling and cuddling together and it’s about the most adorable thing ever.
Shey even has his own special place in Tristan’s room, and these two are inseparable in the house! Even though Shey has his own place in the boy’s room, his favorite spot is right in Tristan’s arms.
“Shey is very content. Cuddling is his favorite thing in the world, and he snuggled right in with Tristan.”
Even though the future didn’t look bright for Shey and the shelter staff had feared that no one would even give this senior pooch a chance, this amazing young boy didn’t look at age or his condition – he simply saw an adorable pup that deserved a loving and forever home for the rest of his days.
These two are just too cute together!
