Boy gets punished for drawing doodles at school, then restaurant offers him decorating job
Drawing doodles and all other kinds of shenanigans in school books is likely something that everyone has done at one point, we all used to be small children. Drawing at school is definitely a familiar story for Joe Whale, a 9-year-old boy from England who has always been incredibly passionate about his doodles. His friends and parents see him as a creative beast full of energy, as Joe simply can’t stop doodling.
In school, he was punished for his doodles and other drawings.
Joe is a good boy, but you can’t really ask him to stop doodling during class – after all, it’s the one thing he enjoys most. Nonetheless, the 9-year-old got in trouble more times than once, but in the end, it was actually worth it.
In fact, Joe actually managed to make a career out of it!
Luckily, the nine-year-old has supportive parents who didn’t want to punish hem, but rather they wanted to give him an opportunity to draw as much as possible. They recognized that he needed a kind of creative outlet and told him that the doodles at school weren’t too much of an issue. They encouraged their talented son to keep drawing.
A bit later, they decided to take it a step further and signed him up for an art class.
It turns out that Joe wasn’t only passionate and crazy about drawing, he’s actually crazy good at it too! For a nine-year-old, the doodles that he can draw match those of professional cartoonists. His artistic talent was soon recognized by one of the teachers, and he made sure that Joe had an opportunity he would be thrilled to take.
A cozy local restaurant saw Joe’s doodles and wanted him to decorate one of the walls.
Which child wouldn’t dream of doodling on a full restaurant wall? And the restaurant, Number 4 in Shrewsbury, made sure that Joe’s drawings would have a prominent place in the restaurant. They wanted Joe’s doodles on one of the walls in the main dining room for everyone to see.
Upon hearing the whole thing, dad Greg Whale was absolutely shocked and excited at the same time. He took Joe to the restaurant after school a couple of times, and the little boy spent no less than a dozen hours on his biggest art project so far.
“They wanted to get Joe into their restaurant to complete an art piece on their wall, and it was in their main dining area, we were over the moon,” a proud dad said. “I asked Joe and he, of course, leaped at the chance to do it so we have been going there after school where for a couple of hours a night he’ll put his creativity on their wall. Joe spent about 12 hours illustrating the wall.”
And as you can see in the pictures, the doodles are absolutely amazing, especially for a boy as young as Joe. They’re pretty classic doodles, but they’re most definitely creative and plain fun to see. There are countless of figures, animals, cartoons, sketches – the walls in this restaurant are certainly eyecatching, to say the least.
After he decorated this wall, his work started to become more and more popular, and he even started having fans!
There are numerous pages on social media where you can check out Joe’s artwork and doodles, and the boy is now more commonly known under his nickname ‘The Doodle Boy’. As for children who misbehave at school, dad Greg has a few warm words of advice.
“I would advise parents to encourage their children to always follow their passion and dreams — research local workshops or groups within your local community,” he said.
Joe’s family couldn’t be more proud of him.
“Joe loves doodling and we’re so proud of everything he’s achieving,” said Whale. “The fact that a completely independent business has asked our 9-year old son to do a professional piece of work for them is incredible.”
What a talented and inspiring young man!
