Boy gets into stranger’s car after school bus won’t bring him to school

What would you do if your child had to walk to school every day? That was the reality for one Nebraska student who had to walk 45 minutes each way to and from school. Fortunately, a stranger stepped in to make a difference.

Gabe and his mom, Kim, would walk to and from school every day. According to Nebraska state law, the young boy and his mom lived too close to ride the bus. The problem was that Kim, a single mother, and part-time student, couldn’t afford a car.

So, she would make the 45-minute trek to Gabe’s school each morning, walking home, and then returning in the afternoon to walk him back home again. In total, Kim walked roughly four hours on her twice-daily journey to school and back again.

Even for Gabe, a normally energetic second-grader, the daily trek was starting to take a toll on him. “I’m kinda tired. I’m really tired when I get back.” Gabe told KMTV.

The coming winter

Kim’s biggest concern was that the weather would soon turn cold, which meant that making the walk each day would be difficult, if not impossible. Nebraska is known for its frigid-cold temperatures in the winter, with exposure to those remaining out in it a present danger. Kim had to do something.

Getting her story out

So, Kim told her story to a local news station, which produced a news story about her plight and aired it on TV. Fortune was on the mother’s side as a good Samaritan saw her story and decided to step in. Becky Novotny had seen the story and so when she saw the pair walking, she pulled over to offer her assistance.

Arrangements were made and now Gabe has a ride to and from school each day. Novotny also has a son in Gabe’s class, so the two can now ride to school together. Novotny, a mother herself, sympathized with Kim’s plight.

“I’m a stay-at-home mom. I’ve got three kids of my own that if I was in the situation, I think I’d want somebody there to help me.” Becky said.

As for Kim, she is just thankful for the news story and grateful for the kindness of strangers. Without Novotny’s courage to stop and lend a helping hand, who knows what would have happened.

“I had nowhere else to turn. Like I said, I tried with the schools, I tried with administration, I tried particularly with the school itself and nothing was happening so I greatly appreciate your guys’ help,” Kim said.
