“Why’s mom white & you’re brown?” - Son says they don’t have to match to be family
Love Has No Color For This Culturally Mixed Family
We live in a world where all cultures are socially accepted. When it comes to adopting children for Jessica Scatterfield, love has no color. Jessica and her husband, a caucasian couple, adopted three beautiful dark-skinned children.
It all began when Jessica and her husband were experiencing difficulties having their own biological children after many unsuccessful IUIs. They wanted a family very badly, so they decided to exercise the option of adopting. The first child they adopted was a dark-skinned little girl. They were so overjoyed with the love they could give to this little girl, they adopted a dark-skinned little boy. To complete their family unit they adopted another dark-skinned boy. Their family was finally complete.
Jessica, her husband, and three children share a beautiful bond and much love. Although Jessica and her husband often think of the children’s biological parents, they are very thankful for the 3 beautiful gifts they have received. They never think of their children as being adopted, they think of their children as being their own cherished miracles.
The Response To A Simple Question
Children are not shy when it comes to asking questions. For the little ones, there is no protocol to be followed as to what is a polite question and what is not. When one of Jessica’s adopted children was asked why his Mom’s skin was white he had a simple answer to a simple question. He said that families don’t have to match to be a family. He had learned this after just a few short weeks of being part of Jessica’s family. Needless to say, Jessica could not be more proud of her son’s answer.
What Jessica Says
“I glanced in the mirror one night when I was putting my children to bed and suddenly remembered that I didn’t grow them in my belly when I saw our reflection staring back at us. It might sound weird that I forget that my children are adopted, but I do. Because to me, they’re just my children.”
Social Acceptance
Unfortunately, not all people are up to date with the social acceptance of mixed families. When Jessica, her husband, and children go out as a family, they still experience some awkward stares from others. However, Jessica does not let this affect her family dynamic. She chooses to think positively about the situation and tells herself they are staring in admiration of her loving family.
However, there are many people, like a man at a restaurant, who approached them to compliment them on how beautiful their family was. This touched Jessica to the point of tears, feeling very proud of her loving family. Jessica and her husband don’t allow others to interfere in the fact that they are extremely proud of their children, regardless of the color of their skin.
An Inspiration
Jessica and her family are a true inspiration to others, showing them that love really has no color. It doesn’t matter what the package looks like, it’s all about what’s on the inside. Jessica and her husband have delicately explained to their three children about mixed families. They have an open communication policy in the home. The children are encouraged to ask questions regarding the difference in their skin color versus the color of their parents’ skin color.
The three children have been raised to know that families don’t have to match to be a family. The simple fact that the color of their skin isn’t the same does not change the fact that they all share the love for one another in their minds and hearts.
