Rescuing animals is one of the most selfless pursuits.

Many believe in the importance of giving a voice to those who can’t speak for themselves. Workers and rescuers move around the clock to devote their time to those in need. Globally, people remain united beneath their love for animals – working to ensure that they are safe and cared for.

Often, some of the most difficult rescues result in some of the most heartfelt stories.

Take Betsy the Pit Bull, for example.

When she was discovered, she barely had a breath left inside of her. Betsy had been bred into a life riddled with pain and abuse.

Due to her breed, Betsy was bought by her owner with the single intention of teaching her to fight other dogs. But her owner soon found out that she fell short of the qualities needed in a fighter. Where she was supposed to be aggressive and lack fear, Betsy was kind and loving.

Since Betsy didn’t possess the qualities needed to be an attack dog, she was vaulted into another role.

Instead, Betsy was used as a ‘bait’ dog.

A grisly position, her new role was to lure the other dogs in and get them riled up before the actual fight. Essentially, Betsy was treated as a piece of meat for the other dogs to maim and to inspire their bloodlust. Bait dogs do not generally last long.

Betsy’s story reveals the darkest of underbellies of the industry. When she was finally discovered she was found in a condition close to death.

Her body contained wounds and injuries that deeply troubled the doctors. Her outlook was doubtful, however, the surgeons remained diligent. And sure enough, Betsy pulled through. Against all odds, she proved to be a miracle case.

Betsy refused to give up.

She knew inside that she was surrounded by caretakers and workers that wanted nothing less than love for her. This was just the medicine the sweet girl needed to help her pull through. It took eight surgeries and months of treatment, but Betsy finally started to heal.

Throughout the entire process, Betsy was surrounded by a compassionate group of people who wanted to spend time with her. As time passed, she began to heal both her body and her heart. The day finally came when she was ready to be adopted.

As soon as Betsy went up for adoption, a family stepped up to adopt her right away.

All of a sudden she found herself amongst loving arms, casting away her previous life altogether. Now, Betsy has a family and a new chance to enjoy the beauty in life. She even has another dog sibling to share adventures with!

Betsy enjoys newfound activities in her renewed life.

She enjoys staying active by running and playing. She also likes to hunt for fish in a stream close to her new home. She’s not great at catching things but she embraces the adventure. And even more so, she now has a little boy who loves her more than he can contain. A love she has healed enough to return ten-fold.

It’s beautiful to witness Betsy’s hardships and rough journey blossom into such a lovely new life.
