10-year-old delivers baby brother at home, saves his mom's life
As a kid, there’s nothing more exciting than your mother getting pregnant with your soon to be a sibling. You wait the long 9-months, anxious to meet the new edition to the family. Typically, the birth happens in a hospital, but it doesn’t always happen like that.
For this young boy, he had no choice but to jump into and action to help deliver his baby brother and save his mother’s life.
Jayden Fontenot is the 10-year-old boy whose quick thinking and swift action helped deliver his baby brother
At 34 weeks pregnant, Jayden’s mother Ashley had woken up in a rush to go to the bathroom when her water suddenly broke. Her fiance had just left for work, so the only people there were Jayden and his 11-month-old baby sister.
When Ashley’s water broke, the baby’s feet were hanging out and by the look of them, she was terrified that her baby wasn’t breathing.
“It didn’t look like he was breathing at all, his feet were purple,” Ashley told KPRC News 2.
Jayden ran to his grandmother’s house to call 9-1-1
After calling the ambulance, Jayden ran back to his mother’s aid and calmly asked her what he needed to do to help her. From there, Ashley began instructing her brave son on getting his little brother out safely.
“He didn’t even look scared, he looked calm, just like brave. So I said I’m just going to tell you what to do and just do it, we gotta get your brother out of there as fast as possible because he’s breached and he can’t breathe right now.” Ashley explained.
The mother and her son started working together to get the baby out, with her pushing and his puling
Jayden’s biggest fear was losing his little brother, mother, or both, but with no time to think he grabbed his baby brother’s legs and began pulling.
“I wasn’t even thinking, I was amazed, I didn’t know what was going on. I just had to pull him by his legs, not hard, gently, until he came out. I was hoping I didn’t hurt him when I was pulling him out,” Jayden told KPRC News 2
When the baby finally came out he still wasn’t breathing, but Jayden knew exactly what to do
Without panicking, the 10-year-old ran into the kitchen to get a nasal aspirator to clear his baby brother’s airways. Once Jayden had his baby brother out and got him breathing, paramedics arrived and took over the situation.
Doctors said without Jayden’s heroic actions, his baby brother would have died from lack of oxygen and his mother could have bled out during delivery.
“I’m so proud of him like I don’t think he understands how much, like how big this is, he saved me and his brother’s life,” said Ashley, Jayden’s stepdad added: “You don’t hear about stuff like this, it’s amazing how brave, and everything he was you know. He did, calm, collected, he saved their life, he’s a hero”
