The queen’s guardsmen are some of the most disciplined servicemen in the entire world. But one couldn’t resist inspiring a little boy dressed up like him.
Most tourists who visit the UK end up visiting things associated with the Royal Family. It’s just what you do!
And in some of the most iconic Royal locations, the Queen’s Guard can be found.
Sure, the Queen’s Guards look a little silly, with their tall bearskin hats. But they are genuine servicemen, and they are charged with protecting the Royals with their lives.
Famously, they are almost impossible to distract. Many people have tried and failed to make them smile, talk or lose focus in some other way. And all have failed, except for one little boy.
It all began when a British mother decided to take her child, Marshall Scott, to Windsor Castle for his fourth birthday.
Scott was obsessed with the Queen’s Guard. So his parents knew the perfect little outfit to give him. It was his own Queen’s Guard uniform.
When they visited Windsor Castle, a regiment of the Queen’s Guard was keeping watch.
The boy was amazed to see the guards marching by, even if they were wearing blue instead of red.
As a group of guards went off duty, the little boy saluted them. At first, the guards didn’t react, as is their prerogative.
But then something heartwarming happened.
The guards marched into their barracks. But one of them marched back out.
He stood in front of the little boy and greeted him like a fellow soldier.
The little boy walked up to the soldier and stood next to him.
He saluted next to the guard. The guard stomped next to the boy as a sign of respect and marched back inside.
It’s incredibly rare to see a Queen’s guardsman accommodate a tourist like that. But the soldier could really tell that it would mean so much to the little boy. The child will never forget that moment.
Luckily, someone was filming the entire thing. The footage made its way onto YouTube, where it soon went viral.
To date, it has gained over 3 million views. It also has over 60,000 likes and 2,000 comments. People have been saying things like this:
The guard who came out to give Scott a special birthday surprise is called Lance Corporal Paul Edden. And he has a cute explanation for why he did what he did in the video:
“It’s not the usual thing to happen while on guard. Usually, I would just take the guardsmen in the guardroom as normal. But my wife and I are expecting a baby boy, and I remembered standing at Edinburgh Castle when I was younger, hoping to get a picture with a soldier.”
Lance Corporal Edden is a proud soldier, but clearly, he’s also going to be an amazing father!
There isn’t much room for fatherhood and discipline to overlap in any military role, but Edden was able to make it happen!
So if you want to get a reaction from a Queen’s guardsman, all you have to do is have a child, dress them up as a guardsman, take them to a British castle or palace and hope that one of the guards is an expectant father who is feeling a surge of parental duty. Why doesn’t everyone do that?
