Boy takes his beloved puppy to a shelter so his dad will stop abusing it

They say that if you love something, you have to set it free. And that was certainly the case for a young boy who surrendered his beloved puppy to a shelter.

On February 13, 2020, a shelter in the Mexican state of Michoacan called Xollin found the pit bull puppy on their doorstep.

He came with a heartwrenching note written by a twelve-year-old boy named Andrés.

Doing the right thing

Andrés clearly loved his dog – so much so that he wanted to spare it the wrath of his father, who was not only abusing the puppy but had planned to sell it.

The boy and his mother concocted a plan behind his father’s back to make sure the dog had a safe and happy life instead.

The note read:

“My name is Andrés and I’m 12 years old. My mom and I decided to leave him to you. All of this is behind my dad’s back, because he was thinking of selling him. But he is always beating and kicking the dog. Once he kicked him so hard that his little tail got injured. I hope you can help him and take care of him. Here is a plush toy so he won’t forget me.”

In a viral Facebook post, the staff described the scene:

“Someone left this dog at the door of the shelter, inside a box, with a plush toy and a note. The note was written by a kid and he explained his dad was always beating the dog and was planning to sell him. So, in such a state of despair, he left the dog here to save him.”

In good hands

The shelter named the pup Rene and he became quite the social media celebrity.

But he wasn’t ready for adoption right away. He had been injured and poorly cared for, necessitating some expensive veterinary care.

Xollin wrote in their Facebook post:

“We need to take the dog to the vet so he can check his tail, which apparently is fractured. We also need to remove parasites and get him a check-up. This means more expenses and work for us, but luckily the dog will be safe.”

After the post was shared thousands of times, the shelter received over 300 requests to adopt Rene, according to CNN.

Of course, this was the perfect chance to remind people that Rene is not the only dog in desperate need of a good home.

“If everyone opened their heart and their home like this little dog, they would have adopted all our dogs from the shelter,” the rescuers said in a Facebook post.

In fact, they had 120 other dogs standing by for a new home.

A new life

After a little TLC, Rene was ready for a new home.

The shelter didn’t share just how they chose the lucky new puppy parents, but they did share photos of Rene looking thrilled to be on his way to a loving new fur-ever home!

Now we just hope the boy and his mother aren’t suffering in place of the sweet dog.
