Woman uses tea lights under a dutch oven to cook “blackout bread” with no electricty
Making a loaf of bread isn’t really easy.
It takes a skilled hand but did you know you can make them at home using candles?
You would think of this as a survival skill when caught out in the wild, but it’s a great way of making bread even in the city.
Electricity could go out or worse, a zombie apocalypse could break out. Kidding.
The three basic things we need for survival are still shelter, water, and food.
With that said, here’s how you can make bread using candles.
It is aptly named Blackout bread.
The ingredients can be found in any supermarket:
- 450g of all-purpose flour or bread flour
- 1-2 tbsp of dry yeast
- 1-1.5 tsp of salt
- 280ml of water
Uploader WELTVERBORGEN says that if you want to use 500g of flour, the rest of the ingredients remain except for water, since you need to increase it to 300ml.
Much better if you have a dutch oven.
It’s a heavy cast iron pot with a tight-fitting lid that chefs and TV personalities cook stew in.
It’s great since it is an all-around cooking tool.
The pot can retain heat which sort of makes it a makeshift oven.
Here’s how to make the dough.
Take a large bowl and combine the flour, yeast, and salt. Mix these really well until they bind together.
Pour in water and stir the mixture. Once you get the desired consistency, knead the mix by hand gently but firmly.
Now let the dough rest.
Use a saran wrap to cover the bowl then place it in a warm place until it doubles in size.
Remove the plastic cover then go ahead and fold the dough in on itself with the help of a spatula.
Transfer the dough to a cake pan. Remember to dust the base with flour so it won’t stick.
Then let it rest for some time so it rises again.
Now to assemble the oven.
A Dutch oven will need any material that can withstand heat. This helps prevent the baking pan from coming in contact with the oven.
That gap has the whole bread enveloped in heat. You could use a metal rack for this part.
Now go get seven tea candles and arrange them in a circle but do leave a bit of space between them.
Use a few bowls as stands, and place a wire rack over the candles. Carefully place your Dutch oven on it.
Bake for three hours.
DO NOT lift the lid of the Dutch oven. It’s tempting to check and see how the bread is going but once the lid opens, trapped heat will escape.
Be patient and wait for three hours, then you can remove the bread from the pan and turn it upside down.
Now you see what it looks like so put it back in the oven and bake for another hour.
Slice and serve with your favorite cup of coffee or tea!
