‘Brew Dogs’ save the day during quarantine — deliver beer to those trying to social distance
During the nationwide stay-at home-orders in place during the coronavirus pandemic, many businesses were left with the inability to serve their customers. Even as the country started to open back up, some shoppers were left hesitant to risk contracting the sometimes-deadly virus.
Business was still possible, but many companies had to take extra precautions to ensure worker and customer safety. One company, though, took the lemons that COVID-19 had given them and decided to make lemonade.
Six Harbor Brewing Company comes up with a plan
Six Harbors Brewing Company, a craft brewery in Huntington, New York, found a way to reach out to their customers while still practicing social distancing. Co-founders Mark and Karen Heuwetter decided to send their two golden retrievers, Buddy and Barley, on beer deliveries to the brewery’s customers.
“People started seeing the dogs on the deliveries, and so we came up with the idea of having them [help] bring the beer to them,” Mark Heuwetter, explained to CNBC.
The Brew Dogs
Called the Brew Dogs, the two are adorable as they accompany the vehicle delivering beer to the company’s customers. And while they don’t carry full cans of beer around their neck, they do function as effective mascots.
Instead of actual beer, the two dogs carry empty beer cans in custom-made holders around their neck.
Then the two wait beside the beer, which is delivered to a safe spot near the customer’s front door by a masked and gloved employee. Once the customers arrive to pick up their beer, they find the two dogs waiting to provide a perfect photo op.
“We’re dog-loving people, and we wouldn’t want to have them get hurt in any way or shake up the beer,” the Heuwetters said.
Buddy and Barley are popular online
So far, the two lovable delivery dogs have become quite popular with the company’s clientele. The deliveries for the brewery have increased to four to 12 deliveries a day, which helps with the lost revenue from the quarantine.
Buddy and Barley have also helped make a name for the brewery on social media.
Before the coronavirus
Even before the outbreak of COVID-19, the two dogs were popular with the company’s customer base. Buddy and Barley have been greeting customers as they enter the brewery’s location since 2018.
“He was like the mayor,” Heuwetter said of Buddy. “He would go out there [to] every single table and greet people and get petted because, quite frankly, he’s a dog. He wants to have pets.”
