Learn how to build your own dreamy backyard pergola with swings and a fire pit
Summer is coming up so you know what that means… get-togethers — barbeques, bonfires, movies, the works. It definitely is the season that many of us look forward to. Even for those who prefer to stay at home or are simply not a fan of crowds, who says sitting on your porch or a swing isn’t summer enough?
Summer means different things to different people. But surely, one thing that can be agreed on is that it would be wise to enjoy it. Whether those summer nights are spent at home with a few loved ones or out on a beach full of friends, it’s the season that counts!
If you’re looking to start a DIY project that will allow you to enjoy summer outdoors and possibly with some friends, you’ve come to the right place. Perhaps you’re considering purchasing a small outdoor structure for your backyard?
But if you had the chance, would you consider building your own pergola, complete with swings and a fire pit?
For those who aren’t sure what a pergola is, prepare to be amazed. By definition, a pergola is “an outdoor garden feature forming a shaded walkway, passageway, or sitting area of vertical posts or pillars that usually support cross-beams and a sturdy open lattice, often upon which woody vines are trained.”
While that may seem difficult to envision, there are various different types of pergolas today.
But if that sounds unattainable to you, you’re not alone. However, do consider that it only costs about $2,300 for the materials and requires about a week of your time. Of course, if you are working alone, plan for longer.
Now, that doesn’t sound too bad, right? If you’re interested, here are some details to get you started.
As mentioned, it will cost about $2,300 for the materials. Of course, if you decide to hire help and desire different types of material (like wood type), you might be looking at an additional $3,000, depending. However, based on the plan and design of Instagrammer and farm blogger, Lauren Ashworth, her total cost came to $2,300.
Her breakdown is as follows: $1,300 for all materials not including the seating and lighting, $600 for six, 6-foot porch swings (price varies), $500 for six Adirondack chairs (varies, they built their own), and $75 for lights (optional).
Lauren’s husband, Brett, built their pergola mainly by himself. Still, it only took him two weeks. They also rented an auger (at a daily rate) that is included in their $2,300 total.
If you’re wondering where the best place is to purchase your materials, check with your local hardware store. Of course, there are also other options such as Lowes, Home Depot, Ace Hardware, etc. Wherever you choose to go, make sure the employees are able to answer any questions that you might have!
After coming to the conclusion to start this fun project, you can find the step-by-step, detailed instructions here!
It is also important to note that having a bit of general knowledge of carpentry and power tools is extremely helpful. Do be careful when attempting to take on a project this large. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when in doubt!
Happy building!
