Clever builder transforms a simple staircase into one-of-a-kind wine cellar

People all over the world have responded differently to being cooped up inside since the coronavirus began.

Suddenly finding themselves with far more free time than usual, many people have decided to make the most of it, getting creative and making up their own little DIY projects around the home.

We’ve seen more people getting into gardening, making their own art, or building bits of furniture for their homes, and one clever builder has gone even further, taking the concept of a ‘wine cellar’ to a whole new level.

Many people dream of having a wine cellar, but simply don’t have the space. The obvious compromise is to simply buy a little wine cooler for your kitchen or set up a simple wine rack.

But Murray Berrill, a 58-year-old builder from Victoria, Australia, decided to do something totally different when his sister asked him to make her a wine cellar.

Instead of actually taking up space in her home that could be put to better use, he devised a genius storage solution for all the wine she’d ever want, right there inside her staircase.

Murray confesses that he hates “dead space” around the home, and it’s fair to say that staircases tend to take up a lot of room.

They’re essential and we can’t really cope without them, but it can be frustrating when you stop and see just how much space they occupy.

Over the years, we’ve seen folks fit little closets under the stairs or come up with other clever little ways to turn staircases into storage solutions, but Murray’s idea was something else!

He decided to install little drawers inside each step, measuring them out to just the right size to hold standard bottles of wine and ensuring that they’d fit snugly and safely inside the actual staircase.

He made 12 of these drawers in total, with each one being fitted with bottle holders, and then he fitted them into the stairs.

The staircase can hold a total of 156 bottles, far more than most wine coolers, and it keeps the bottles safe, dry, and away from direct sunlight which can affect the flavor and quality of the wines as well. In short, it’s an absolute dream for any wine lover.

Murray also incorporated insulation and thermometers into the staircase to ensure that the wine stays at just the right temperature. He really did think of everything!

In total, he says he spent around $5,900 on the project, including the costs of making the drawers and buying the various materials, and it took him less than two weeks to finish.

His sister was absolutely thrilled with the result, amazed to see how Murray had made such clever use of something as simple as a set of stairs.

Murray shared some photos of his creation on Facebook, where it went viral with the wine-loving community. Many people called the Aussie builder a genius, while others joked that they’d need a bigger staircase to store all of their wine.

He hopes that his project will inspire people to think outside the box, reminding them that even if you live in a small home, there are so many ways you can give yourself more storage and make the most of what you’ve got.

He also says if anyone out there wants a similar staircase cellar, they could either try to make it themselves or get in touch with a professional, as a lot of builders and other pros are in need of any work they can get right now.
