Driver didn’t think photo of her holding child’s hand was “big deal” – police thought otherwise
There’s just something very special about the first day of school, but it’s definitely not a moment that every child or student looks forward to. When our little ones make the jump to another type of school like preschool, it can even get more stressing. Some children will definitely appreciate that there’s a routine to their days again, while others would just rather spend time at home instead.
When preschooler Alex from Wisconsin stepped onto the school bus for the first time of the year, his heart sank a little. He said goodbye to his mom, but you could just tell he wasn’t too eager to get on the large bus and head off to school.
It was Axel’s first day of 4K, a pre-kindergarten year, and mom wanted to capture a photo of his first day on the bus as a memory.
4K is a type of school for children who are four years old or younger, and it’s quite comparable to elementary school.
Even though he got on the bus with a smile and a cute face as you can see in the picture, it didn’t take long before he started shedding some tears.
“He was super excited to go, but when the bus came around corner he was really quiet. The bus opened the door and I looked at him and he started crying,” Axel’s mom Amy said to CNN.
Just like any mom would do, Amy then approached her child, gave him a big hug and assured him that everything was going to be okay. However, Axel didn’t want to let go of her and just wanted to stay home. Amy knew that she couldn’t stay with him for much longer, as the bus needed to head off to school.
Luckily, the bus driver noticed that Axel was in distress, and she immediately stepped in to comfort the little boy.
Isabel Lane was driving the bus and felt so sorry that he wasn’t feeling well on the bus, so she wanted to tell him that everything was going to be okay too.
“I told him, ‘Buddy, you got this and will have so much fun.”
Axel sat directly behind her, and the woman then gave her hand so that he’d have something to hold onto. It’s an absolutely adorable sight and the picture speaks more than a thousand words.
“I stuck my hand behind the seat as maybe something else to grab onto and he grabbed my hand.”
Mom Amy managed to grab this picture just in time, and it just absolutely warmed her heart and made her feel so grateful that Isabel comforted her baby the best she could.
“I could see that he needed to be comforted and that was the best I could do at the time,” Isabel added.
During the bus ride, the two got to know each other a little bit more and chatted. Axel was completely calm when they arrived at school! Isabel says that it’s important to let every child know just how much they matter.
“A big win for me is every morning I tell the kids as they get off to make it a good day and when I have a kid who I know doesn’t like to go to school say, ‘Yeah, I’ll try.’ It makes me feel good because they heard me and I hope it makes them feel like they can be heard.”
The best part about this whole story? Alex now loves going to school and hopping on the bus is one of his favorite things to do.
What an absolutely amazing bus driver!
