Bus driver doesn’t think photo of her holding boy’s hand is a big deal until the police see it
The first day of school is an exciting yet daunting experience for any student. They get to meet new friends and learn new stuff, but it also means stepping out of their comfort zone and meeting new people. Everyone understands the first-day jitters – whether it’s a preschooler or a college freshman.
For one student, his first day of school was a memorable one.
Axel is a sweet little boy who started 4K last week.
4K is a pre-kindergarten year for kids 4 and under in an elementary school setting. Like any other kid, Axel was escorted by his mom, Amy Johnson, to the school bus.
At first, Axel was excited to start his first day of classes.
He was totally unfazed and cool when they approached the bright yellow school bus.
However, as they started to get near, fear and trepidation were seen on his sweet face. The reality of starting his first day of school and not having his parents with him came crashing down.
As for Axel’s mom, Amy, she wanted to immortalize the moment of seeing her son on the school bus. Upon checking on Axel, she saw that he was close to tears. In a few seconds, he burst into tears.
“He was super excited to go, but when the bus came around the corner he was really quiet,” she told CNN. “The bus opened the door and I looked at him and he started crying.”
Worried, Amy tried to comfort Axel.
She tried her best to encourage the little boy.
“I told him, ‘Buddy, you got this and will have so much fun,’ ” Amy said.
Amy tried to seat him on the bus but he was clinging onto her. Axel was terrified and any kid on the first day of school can understand. He was excited to start his first day of classes, but he was scared of the new environment.
Seeing the poor little boy, the bus driver, Isabel Lane, comforted him by offering him an open seat right behind her.
Once Amy was assured that Axel will be safe on the bus, she tried to escape in the hopes that he will be able to pull together, but the little boy clung to her arms. This is when Isabel offered her hand to the little boy as a way of comforting him on the way to school.
“I could see that he needed to be comforted and that was the best I could do at the time,” Isabel said.
Isabel has been a school bus driver for the Augusta School District for almost a year.
She loves her job and she loves driving kids to school. She learns a lot from them and goes out of her way to understand them.
“You get invested in cheering them on,” she said. “I tell the kids as they get off to make it a good day and when I have a kid who I know doesn’t like to go to school say, ‘Yeah, I’ll try.’ It makes me feel good because they heard me and I hope it makes them feel like they can be heard.”
Amy wanted to capture the beautiful moment, so she took out her camera and forever immortalized the moment. The Augusta Police Department loved the photo and shared it on Facebook.
Many praised the kind-hearted Isabel for comforting the crying Axel.
Today, Axel is happy to go to school.
“Now he gets on the bus everyday ready to go and loves school,” Johnson said.
