Bus driver notices heat-stricken senior and immediately jumps in to help

Looking out for each other isn’t difficult.

All you need are helpful hands, a willing heart, and an open mind. When you have all three, you discover just how much power you have and how impactful your actions can be. It’s even more wonderful when you extend this power towards those you don’t know. Then you can create that ripple of change, the one the world badly needs.

Mike Blair is someone with that power.

He is a bus driver from Las Vegas and is always known for going the extra mile for his passengers and the people he meets along the way.

That’s why when he saw an elderly gentleman acting a bit differently at the bus stop, Mike immediately realized something wasn’t right. It happened sometime in August as Mike was going along his usual route. The elderly gentleman was sitting in the scorching heat as he was waiting for the bus. Mike recalls how it felt like 105 degrees that day and shared,

“This one gentleman, he did not board the bus. He seemed like he started to grasp the wall and seemed to be in distress.”

Mike sprang into action.

Not only did he assist the elderly man into the bus and give him a seat right in front of the air conditioner, he also took water from his lunchbox and helped patiently as the man took sips. Ten minutes later, the elderly man was able to get up on his feet.

Mike did not know this man personally but he took it upon himself to make sure nothing happened.

According to Mike, the elderly man was grateful. The bus driver shares,

“He got off the bus and said ‘thank you’. As he got off, he said, ‘I’m 92 years old.’ Simply amazing.”

What Mike didn’t know, though, was that his good deed caught the attention of a passenger named Brent Leabu, who snapped a photo of the event and shared it on Twitter and Reddit.

It was only when Mike’s employer, Keolis, reached out that Mike learned he had gone viral.

The company rewarded Mike with a gift bag, balloons, and a cake, and a framed copy of the viral tweet that showed his good deed. Surprised and thankful as he was, the driver still didn’t believe he did anything out of the ordinary.

“We are all brothers and sisters. I think anyone would’ve done that. Maybe this will touch people’s hearts so they will do something kind as well.”

Not only was it amazing how Mike sensed that the elderly man was struggling, he actually went and did something about it.

Mike’s example is a good reminder that all of us, young and old alike, have the power to help. The kindness we show can save lives, inspire others, and bring change. It’s something this world truly needs more of. May we never hesitate to reach out and show compassion towards others, strangers or not.
