When this young man went to play for the crowds one morning, he had no idea he would meet one of his heroes.
Buskers get to see all kinds of people during their performances. After a while, they start to think that nothing can surprise them. That’s what this busker thought, and then something amazing happened.
The busker found a good spot and started playing his acoustic guitar. He had quite a few songs in his set list, but his favorite was Smalltown Boy by Bronski Beat. The band’s vocalist was Jimmy Somerville.
When the busker decided to play that song, he started playing with extra enthusiasm.
A man walking a dog went up to the busker. At first, the busker thought that the man was just going to make a comment to him. But then the man started singing along with the busker. And the busker could tell that the man’s voice sounded just like Jimmy Somerville’s on the single.
This man walking his dog was the singer of the original song. The busker had to pause for a small moment. When he had composed himself, he started playing the song again, singing along with Somerville.
All the while, Somerville’s French bulldog was sniffing away, adding a layer of cuteness to the scene.
When the busker finished playing, the amassed crowd started to cheer. Somerville shook hands with the young busker. The busker had to confirm that the man he was talking to was Somerville. The singer confirmed that he was who the busker thought he was.
The busker still couldn’t quite believe what was happening. After a few “oh my gods” the busker thanked Somerville for singing with him.
Luckily, someone was filming the entire thing, and they then uploaded the footage onto YouTube. The video soon went viral. To date, it has gained over 10 million views. It also has more than 40,000 likes and 2,200 comments. People have been saying things like this:
The busker was obviously delighted to meet the original singer of the song, just randomly on the street. But Somerville himself must have been incredibly happy to hear his song being performed over 20 years after he first recorded it.
Smalltown Boy, the song the busker and Somerville were singing, was Bronski Beat’s first-ever hit single, reaching number 3 on the charts in the UK, the band’s home country. But what must be really special for the artists is to know that their song has stood the test of time. Somerville really got a chance to appreciate that on this day!
Who knows, perhaps Somerville has inspired the young busker himself to keep working at his music and produce his own hits?
Getting the chance to sing with your musical hero is something that very few people get to achieve, but he can say that he’s talented enough to have done it! Hopefully, the busker will go far.
