Most of us love a good steak or roast chicken. But there are some supermarket meats you would definitely avoid, if you knew the truth behind them.
Yes, we all know that meat comes from dead animals. This isn’t an article telling you to avoid meat because it’s murder.
Instead, we’re highlighting certain meat products that are a no go.
In late 2020, a butcher who has seven years of experience at a national supermarket chain gave his top tips for meat purchasing. Here are those tips:
1. Avoid pre-seasoned/marinaded meats
Sure, it can feel super convenient to pick up a cut of meat that comes packaged with a range of seasonings. But as with all conveniences, supermarkets can get away with charging a huge markup in cost for very little work. But what’s worse is that the meats are often over-marinaded/over-seasoned.
Instead, just rub those seasonings/marinades onto the meat yourself. It only takes a couple of minutes, and you’ll end up with much tastier food.
2. Avoid pre-assembled skewers
Again, this is another way that stores can charge a premium for cheap products. And often, pre-assembled skewers will be made with cheap cuts of meat. Yes, assembling your own skewers is definitely time-consuming. But if you pick out a good cut of meat, the taste will be worth it!
3. Avoid filet
Filet is almost always sold at a premium. But honestly, it’s overrated. Instead, you can buy cheaper cuts of meat that are just as tasty. For example, teres major is a cut that’s delicious, but it retails for one-third of the price of filet. Or, you could try New York strip steak, which is similarly tasty.
4. Steer clear of water chilled chicken
When you chill chicken meat with water, the meat absorbs the water. Basically, that means that you’re buying water instead of meat! When it cooks, the meat will lose that water and go all rubbery. And worst of all, the water that the chicken was chilled with contained chlorine, which also gets absorbed into the meat!
Instead, look for chicken that has been air chilled. Naturally, if the chicken wasn’t chilled with water, then it won’t absorb water and chlorine. Durr.
And if you can’t see any labeling that says whether or not the chicken was water or air chilled, assume that it was water chilled!
5. Only buy chicken that’s labeled “No antibiotics”
If the chicken (and other poultry) is only labeled, “No added hormones,” then it’ll still have antibiotics!
6. Buy chicken that has the USDA Organic label
Do you want to buy chicken that’s been fed a bunch of crap? No. And yes, it will cost a couple of bucks more. But you’ll know that that chicken was high quality.
The video that informed the world of this advice has become incredibly popular online.
In just over two weeks, it has gained over 300,000 views. It also has more than 2,700 likes and 150 comments. People have been saying things like this:
So now you know how to shop smart when it comes to meat!
