77 years ago, one of the best dance routines ever was filmed – all on the 1st take
Before a dance routine is performed in public or shown to the world, the artist would need to come up with the right steps and rehearse the routine a couple of times. He’d spend long hours doing the steps and revising the routine until he’s able to get all the moves correctly.
A perfect dance routine would need the artist to invest not just his time and mind, but also his energy and concentration. These things help ensure that everything’s perfect and there’ll be minimal errors.
Cab Calloway and the Nicholas Brothers weren’t like most performers.
Instead of spending long hours practicing, they performed a completely unrehearsed routine. And the most amusing part? They were able to record everything in just one take!
Their performance started with Cab leading his band.
Even if the routine was just about to start, you can tell how excited everyone was to be a part of the performance. Everyone was smiling while holding and playing their instruments.
Cab’s voice was exceptional.
That doesn’t come as a surprise. After all, he was one of the most talented African American singers of his generation.
A few seconds into Cab’s song, the Nicholas Brothers jumped from one of the tables.
They started tap dancing and moving in unison. Their movements were quite intricate and breath-taking. At one part, they even catapulted themselves over each other’s head as they step down a staircase.
Their performance was so good that Fred Astaire, an American actor, singer, dancer, television presenter, and choreographer said that it was the greatest dancing he’d ever seen on film.
The duo were so good at tap dancing.
Even without rehearsing their routine, they were able to dance as if they did. Both of them didn’t miss a beat or were late for a step. Everything was super on point.
Even with their talent, The Nicholas Brothers weren’t always famous during their time in the industry.
They were often a subject of racial discrimination which made their time in Hollywood less than easy. Despite that, the Nicholas Brothers still pursued their passion for dancing.
The duo became famous for their highly acrobatic technique which was called as flash dancing. It’s daring and required high level of artistry and skills. They were so good at their craft that they were considered as the best tap dancers of their time.
Cab Calloway, on the other hand, used to lead the most popular big bands in the country. An American jazz singer, he became known as the “Hi-de-ho man of jazz”. He was the first African-American musician to have a nationally syndicated radio show. He was the first to sell a million records for one song, too.
Even after his fame, he still remained a household name. He did TV appearances and a few concerts in both Europe and the US. He also appeared in a couple of different shows, such as Hello, Dolly! and The Ed Sullivan Show.
