Business owner takes $10K out of his savings – hands cash to strangers

There are always people who step up and help in times of need. One of the biggest issues associated with the coronavirus is the job loss associated with the shelter in place orders. If you can’t go to work and your place of business shuts down, people end up getting laid off. With unemployment rising and cash short for some, this man did something pretty selfless.

Seeing the need in his community, this man gave 10k away on the streets from his own bank account.

Pete Darmos is a Melbourne native who owns a café in the area. His business was one of the ones affected by the government shutdowns and the shelter-in-place orders since people are less likely to spend extra money eating out. Pete, however, knew that other people were hurting worse than he was. With that in mind, he looked for a way to help people who needed it.

While watching TV, Pete saw a news story that broke his heart and catalyzed him into action.

Watching the news, Pete noticed a story that was highlighting the lines of people that were lining up outside the social security office to get money to buy food. It clicked for him that some people weren’t even able to afford groceries. With this sad reality setting in, Pete took action.

Going to the bank, he withdrew 10k worth of savings and started handing it out on the streets!

While most people see things that need to be done and feel bad, Pete acted. The people who saw it called it the kindest thing they have ever seen. For good reason, he developed a new nickname as “Generous Pete”.

Handing out $100 bills to people, he started at the back of the line and worked his way forward.

His goal was to allow each individual to go to the store and get just a few bags of groceries. While Pete is adamant that it isn’t a lot of money, it is making a huge impact for a lot of people.

Wanting to remain semi-anonymous, Pete never even gave his last name.

Originally, Pete wanted to remain completely anonymous and simply do his good act and disappear. On second thought, he decided to give his first name and then push for some government legislature when he had a few minutes of news coverage. With only a first name to go off of, the nickname “Generous Pete” is an apt name to refer to him by.

Generous Pete just wanted to inspire people to help those around them as well.

Through his actions, Pete really was looking to inspire people to help people who needed it. While we can’t see the individual responses of people who received the money, we can only imagine that at least a few of them would feel the inspiration to act. Sometimes it takes the leadership of one to spur the movement of the many. Pete and his leadership helped people and inspired people to continue in his footsteps.
