After viewing an emotional news story concerning the desperation sweeping through his community, he felt compelled to step up.

The cafe owner was forced to close his own shop’s doors in Melbourne but wanted to share his financial fortune with those around him.

His big heart has earned him the name “Generous Pete”.

The news story talked about long lines of people queuing up outside social security offices around the city, waiting to get money for food.

He immediately rushed down to his bank and withdrew ten thousand dollars in cash. Then, he visited one of the local Social Security lines and started handing out the money.

He told the local news station:

“I started at the back of the queue and then basically handed everybody a $100 note. There were tears and disbelief. $100 is not a lot of money, but four or five bags of food meant a lot to these people.”

He knew that even if it wasn’t a lot of money it was a life-changer for many. His contribution would make an instant difference in the well-being of those around him. The extra income would help put food on the table.

Darmos initially wanted to keep his identity anonymous, but the heart-warming story attracted some attention. While he simply wanted to be known as ‘John’, he was persuaded to reveal his full name.

He revealed to reporters that he only wanted to pay it forward:

“I came here as a six-year-old from a village in Greece and this country has been good to me.”

He likewise hopes to see an easier road paved for his fellow people amid the outbreak. He said he’d like to see the government “guarantee food, stop evictions, stop mortgages and ensure electricity and gas for all Australians.”

The story, covered by 7NEWS Australia has gained some traction across the internet. The story has moved many and continues to touch lives.

“When he started shaking his head ‘no’ after being called a legend, that’s when you can tell he didn’t do it for the publicity. This is what helping your fellow humans looks like. Thank you, Pete.”

The good samaritan hopes his heartfelt deed will inspire and encourage others to do the same. In troubling times we are given an extra opportunity to exercise compassion for our neighbors.
