Calf escapes slaughter and lives with deer family in the woods
Meet Bonnie. The cow who defied all odds to survive.
Bonnie used to live on a farm with the rest of her family. However, the farm owner’s death rendered them homeless when the new owners decided to sell the entire family for slaughter.
She heard her herd’s cries as if they were desperately pleading to spare them.
That’s when Bonnie saw a window of opportunity and made a run for it.
She had no idea where to go, so she ran into the nearby woods.
Lost and alone, but safe from being slaughtered. Bonnie went on with her journey to safety.
Becky Bartels loves animals and has set up a trail cam in her nearby woods.
She tied the cameras around a few tree branches to see which animals would visit that part of Holland, New York.
It was one of the beauty and marvels of nature she enjoyed watching with her camera. Until one day, she noticed a new visitor.
Becky noticed a young cow passing by. It was Bonnie.
Winter came, and she was worried the calf would get cold and have nothing to eat.
She decided to bring her some bedding and food each day, ensuring Bonnie could keep herself warm and make it through the winter.
Becky continued observing the lost calf in her trail camera when she discovered something surprising.
It turned out Bonnie was under the care of a herd of deer.
Becky saw how the young cow brought her deer friends and shared her food and bedding.
This assured Becky that Bonnie had a “family” to run to and that she was safe.
As word spread like wildfire about the “cow in the woods,” nearby hunters also took notice and attempted to hunt Bonnie, and she was not safe anymore.
This prompted Becky to ask for help from Farm Sanctuary.
Farm Sanctuary is an animal welfare organization aiming to save farm animals from abuses of factory farming. Luckily, they have a sanctuary in Watkins Glen and were quick to respond to Becky’s call for help.
However, saving Bonnie wasn’t as easy since the calf had mistrusted humans already.
They devised a plan of putting up a fence around where Becky would usually leave supplies for Bonnie.
They closed in on her little by little each day until the area was small enough for them to lead her to their truck.
Farm Sanctuary asked Becky’s help to sedate Bonnie so she wouldn’t run away.
Their first attempt failed because the sedative wasn’t strong enough, and Bonnie was able to run away.
They increased the dosage during the second attempt, and the calf was fast asleep.
Then, they slowly tied her up and led her inside the truck, and she was off to her new home.
It was an emotional moment for Becky and Farm Sanctuary.
Becky wanted to save this young cow from being hunted and give it a chance to survive.
Her wish came true, thanks to the efforts of Farm Sanctuary. But all these wouldn’t be possible without Becky’s care and quick action.
Now Bonnie is enjoying her life in Farm Sanctuary. She may miss her deer friends, but she is finally home with her own herd.
