Man installs camera in backyard and accidentally captures one of America’s least seen animals
What he caught was unbelievable
A sight unseen.
Capturing wildlife through a backyard camera.
Rare black coyote captured on film.
As the family normally does with their footage, they transferred it to a computer and began to skim through it. Then they saw what looked to be a canine with black fur.
They posted the footage to their YouTube channel and viewers were quick to let them know what animal they had captured on camera.
“Rare animals: Rare black coyote at trail cam! “Black coat coloration, or melanism, is a trait that is occasionally seen in coyotes in the Southeast, although it is rarely exhibited by coyotes elsewhere,” reads a description of the video.
The animal looked as though it was a cross-breed coyote. These are rarely captured on camera or seen in the wild.
This is the best-known footage of it.
While the man’s property spans a wide range, the chance of such a rare animal wandering past his camera is very low.
And the quality is top-notch.
“The same genetic mutation that causes the trait in coyotes can also be found in black-colored gray and red wolves, as well as in dogs. This suggests that the trait could have found its way into the southeastern coyote gene pool through past hybridizations with wolves,” reads a statement from the Atlanta Coyote Project.
Trail cameras are an excellent way to learn about wildlife and help researchers.
Not only are trail cameras a fun and interesting way to view wildlife in their natural habitat, but they can also help aid researchers.
When rare animals are discovered on trail cams, local researchers can help track them to learn more about their movements and behavior.
It’s also a great way to develop a deeper appreciation for the diversity of wildlife in nature. So much goes on when humans aren’t around, and trail cams can help us discover so much more than we already know.
